For a family event, i ended up in Jersey City and to make up for free time, a few of us decided to take a break from the event and walked over to Beechwood Cafe & Market. I must admit, the place has a certain charm to it with big display cases highlighting their baked goods. Being pressed with time, we decided to grab coffee, cookies, and cupcakes to hold us off till a late dinner. The coffee was decent and the baked goods were moist, flavorful, and filling. One thing i was intrigued by was the offering of Dry Cranberry Lime flavored GUS (Grown-Up Soda), which was unique and quite satisfying. Overall, the place is beautiful and plenty to offer their customers, however the customer service kinda soured the experience. i understand that many restaurants have the right to seat their own customers and not allow outside food/drinks, but if someone on the other hand purchases food there, they should be allowed to sit if the hall/tables are not occupied. Unfortunately, if we didn't have a little kid, we'd have walked out with the goods not caring, but walking and eating for a kid can be a task at hand. In this instance, the seating area's servers were not happy that we asked to sit in the seating area, simply because we weren't ordering off the menus. i respect the place for their food and offerings, just not their customer service...

This review is in reference to the bakery, NOT the restaurant. The cupcakes are terrific. However the rice krispies treats are way too hard (not enough marshmallow) and the brownies are way too cakey and not chewy enough. They kind of crumble apart. If they could fix that, the bakery could be great!

This place looks great from the outside, but I guess that's to make up for what's lacking in the quality of their food. As a restaurant/ brunch spot the food is strange. Breakfast burritos should not be toasted or panini pressed or whatever it is they do to them. It's just wrong. I ordered mushroom hash, which was boring and not very tasty. As a coffee shop, they have rules I do not like. If you order coffee from the barista at the counter and you cannot have a seat at one of the tables. However, you can sit at one of the tables and order a coffee from a waitress. This may be great for some people, but it makes the whole experience uncomfortable. It's not the kind of place you can sit down with a coffee and get work done. (Aside from all this, the coffee is good. I just don't like the service rules.) They should just decide if they want to be a coffee shop or restaurant, and stop trying to do both inadequately.

The service here has gone beyond down hill here. My girlfriend just got back from picking up two coffees that were supposed to be flavored but instead were plain. It's just the latest incident in recent months of orders getting screwed up there. The food is alright, but not worth dealing with absolutely horrible service. Their Dinner menu is almost all very good, especially the pastas, the meatloaf sandwich, their Korean sandwich, salads, etc... Their teas are a bit overpriced even for the brand/quality they use. Some other menu items are also overpriced. Agreed with some other reviewers. Their service is good but not great and like someone else said, their bus boy works harder than the waiters. They have a few other downsides - their pastries/baked goods and desserts are not good. For fresh baked, i expected more. Some things were too dry while others were just lacking the flavor. Their brunch menu was also disappointing- the wannabe tex mex stuff is not a good blend of flavors. The reason they get a 3 star rating is because their dinner menu is so good and thus saves them. I'd give them a solid 4 if you just ordered from there dinner menu.

What a cute little place to stop in on a lazy weekend for brunch! I just love the french toast with fruit and the home fries. My father is a huge fan and makes sure Beechwood is on his hit list every time he comes to visit. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. If I could just get them to deliver, that would make Beechwood almost perfect.

Cute coffee shop that I kinda fell in love with right when we walked in. All the staff was friendly and we never had to wait or ask for anything so looks like we got here on a good day. The first cup of coffee was slightly weaker than I'd like but the next two were perfect. Yay for a new pot! We both ordered a breakfast sandwich, mine with ham...his with sausage. It was pretty damn good but there were a few other things I probably should have ordered instead...but we wanted something kinda quick and easy. Also ordered the hash browns and they were pretty meh. Just roasted potatoes, nothing much to them. The baked goods looked and smelled great too. Wouldn't mind coming here in the morning and just sitting with a book or getting some work done while drinking some coffee and relaxing.

I came here last fall to buy cupcakes with,my friends and they we're delicious! Came back on my latest visit to NY/NJ for lunch with a friend. We we're famished. He ordered a sandwich and I ordered a salad. One extra star for my,salad... Yum! Another extra star for the,yummy cupcakes. The waiters and host were very rude. They completely ignored us the whole time and we flagged them down every time for service. Unbelievable! Suffice to say, my tip very much reflected their service... I've never done that to anyone but the people here earned it. No friendly "hello" or "how can I help you?" Nothing.

I know a lot of people, including my boyfriend, REALLY like this place, but I am not a fan. I'm basing this partly on the food and partly on an experience I had, so maybe it's a one-off (two-off?), but thought people should know. First, I have to say that if you go on a Friday, try the Peanut Butter-Banana coffee. That is the one thing I might slightly entertain the notion of going back for. I tried it thinking it would be super gross, but it was awesome. Just delicious. I think I got it iced. One downside to their flavored coffee system is that it's one flavor a day on a set schedule, so you have to hit it right. Another downside is I'm pretty sure it's more expensive than Starbucks. But the PB-B coffee is worth it. I've eaten there once, for brunch (Fall 2010). I don't eat eggs, so the breakfast burritos were out. Also, in terms of things that used to be animals, I only eat chicken or, occasionally, turkey. Waffles had recently been added to Beechwood's menu, said the sign in the window, and I got a waffle and berries, I believe. It was awful. It was too thin (not Belgian-y), dense, and chewy, not light and fluffy. It was also cold. Well, it might've been room temp, but the cold toppings made it cold very quickly. My bf says the breakfast burritos are great, so if you like those, give them a shot. I'd gotten coffee there numerous times in the morning on the way to work, and so on the rainy, cold, Fall 2010 evening that I found myself in JC because there was an accident and too much related traffic to make the workshop I had signed up for in Hoboken, I decided to grab coffee at Beechwood to console myself while I waited to meet up with my boyfriend. I ordered my coffee at the counter (where, I guess to be fair, it says counter orders are takeout only), but then got a text from my bf that he was running late. There were TWO tables in the dining room with people and two servers with nothing to do. When the girl at the counter handed over my coffee, I asked her if I could go have a seat because I had an unexpected wait and it was freezing/raining out, and she stared at me blankly and said, "Oh, well then you shouldn't have ordered at the counter." I said I was sorry and that something had come up and I just needed a dry place to wait, as I had had to park fairly far away and wanted to get dry. She said I couldn't sit in the dining room, because for that, I would've had to order at a table. Honestly, had she said go in, I would've left a couple of dollars on the table, even though I would've gotten rid of my own paper cup, since the servers clearly weren't getting many tips that night. So, for about 20 min, I perched as well as I could on this little shelf about a foot off the floor in a tiny alcove in the takeout area across from a beverage cooler. Nobody looked at me or spoke to me the entire time, so I guess that's par for the course for people who order at the counter and need some shelter from nasty weather. If I ever remember to search online for Peanut-Butter Banana coffee, that will mark the very end of my relationship with Beechwood. I think I'm going to Google it now.

I have mixed feelings about this place. I have been here several times for dinner and only once for brunch. The dinners were always good. I really like the grilled chicken sandwich. I've also tried their veggie lasagna. The lasagna, although really good, was slightly too small of a portion for me, although not by much. I was still a little hungry after but not bad. I think it is more than enough for most people, and I wouldn't mind getting it again unless I was extremely hungry. My fiancee has had their penne alla vodka, which she said was really good, although not the best she's had. Although this place seems to be very popular for brunch, we really weren't impressed. I had one of their breakfast burritos, and it really didn't hit the spot. Although I don't mind, my fiancee also doesn't like their small chairs that she thinks are uncomfortable. All in all, a nice place. I will likely still go back sometime.

This is my date place. Seriously. I actually tell every girl I have brought her that it is my 'date place'. They probably internally get a little pissed, but then after we sit, enjoy the meal and the laid back atmosphere, it becomes a favorite of theirs too. Everything about the Beechwood is amazing. It is a beautifully designed little cafe with old chairs that look like they were picked up at a garage sale, while having modern fixtures all over the restaurant. The food is also delicious and fresh, even though it is a little tiny. Almost everytime I go, I get the shrimp penne vodka. It looks tiny, then you realize the bowl is deep, and every time I have gone, I have had to bring some home. The Beechwood Cafe is maybe one of my favorite places in the state of NJ, but not only for the food, but for the whole atmosphere of the cafe. It is just beautiful. If you are stopping in Jersey City for business or a stop-over from paying crazy rates in NYC, then treat yourself to this place, you will not be disappointed. *I have read the other reviews and everyone is disappointed with the food. This is not a place where people line up around the block for their salads. It is a calm, cool place to enjoy some good food. The food isn't out of the world, but its good.

Beechwood is more like a 2.5 for me. I was like a moth attracted to the goodies conveniently positioned in the windows of the cafe's "market". I love that you can browse a bit while waiting for your table (beats the crush at Marco & Pepe). I have been once for brunch with a group of 3 friends who I convinced in to PATH-ing on a Saturday from Manhattan. They were pleased with the price point. The brunch itself was ok - not bad - but just ok. Useful spot as a standby if Thirty Acres or Marco & Pepe are too packed.

This is a solid cafe that serves OK food. It is not fine dining and has a very small un-diverse menu, but does the trick and they have great coffee. They also have wonderful pastries and breads to go with coffee. Some servers are great and a couple with a nasty attitude. As far a s the food, their Beechwood salad is great, but the greens seem like they have been out for a while. I always have to pick out a few wilted pieces of greens from my sandwiches and salads-- so this could improve. Besides that their breakfasts are OK, something that you could do at home. Even so, this is a good place to grab a quick bite close to the train station and good for working in non-peak hours. Also, stroller friendly for those of you that need a place that isn't so cramped.

I wish I could give Beechwood a 3.5.... The food was REALLY good, but as everyone else has stated, the service SUCKED. The inside was packed, so we sat outside. Our waitress seemed like a space cadet and totally forgot about us. It was a bit breezy, in October, so it was a bit annoying to wait so long. Someone else brought us our coffee and asked how we were doing. We waited way too long for our check after our table was cleared. The good things though: It's super cute! The little store attached is a bonus. The carrot cake is amazing. We took it to go and the slice was definitely big enough to share. For breakfast I had a ham and cheese croissant and home fries. Both were moist and delicious. My boyfriend had a breakfast burrito that had a green chili sauce which was also amazing. The coffee was delicious as well. If it wasn't for the service, this would be a solid 4star cafe.

I wanted to grab a quiet brunch alone for some personal time. I need to say this is the worst service that I ever gotten. Mind I am not the type of person to wait the staff full attention but I would like some attention. First, I come in to the lunch area and ask for a seat for one and I got pointed to my table and waiting for 10 mins or so I need to ask someone who is my server and wait for my menus. I ordered my entree and it was ok disk. Then it took me like 15 mins for them to pick up my plate and refill my water. Here is the icing to my cupcake, when I ask for the check it is my table 5 mins tops. I am going somewhere for brunch from now on.

This place has great, strong, coffee (which is also slightly expensive), delicious vegetable lasagna, a good veggie burger, and good sandwiches. Service can be hit or miss depending on your particular server (and their mood that day). But on the upside: they have plenty of outdoor seating in the warmer months, they have free wireless internet and don't mind if people sit and use it for a while, and the food is generally good. Suggestion: if you order a salad - I suggest getting dressing on the side, I've often had my salads come out drenched or with wilted lettuce which is easier to spot when the dressing is on the side. But, I almost bumped this place up to a three on the strength of their vegetable lasagna alone - so good! Soggy salads and occasionally grouchy staff knock this place down to two stars from what would have been three.

My wife and I had high hopes when we discovered this cool little cafe in one of the up-and-coming neighborhoods in jersey city.. the atmosphere, music, and menu all seemed great. lots of cool interesting stuff on the menu that reminded me of some of my favorite cafes in LA or SF.. then came the nightmare... coffee was sub-par and served in tiny little tea cups. our food took forever and our waitress didn't bother to refill our coffee's once - instead spending the entire hour chatting with friends and doodling on a napkin. the one time she did refill the coffee she over-filled it, did not clean it up, and didn't even give me an extra napkin. by the time our food came it was underwhelming to say the least. the bagel with the lox was poorly presented. bagel was way too small, over-toasted, and generally low quality. they served WAY too much lox and capers for such a small bagel. the breakfast burrito was a HUGE let-down - mostly being eggs with very little else. a side dollop of sour cream and guacamole made me feel like i was at denny's or something. our son wanted oatmeal or mac and cheese - neither of which they had. oh well... i guess this confirms our previous impression of jersey..

Great restaurant, food was off the chain. I had the eggs Benedict and it was great. Decor is great, old cracking chairs makes it feel like you are back in the 1800's. Then right next door is a bakery owned by the same owner, walk from the restauraunt to the bakery and get some pastries to go after your full tummy, get for snack :-)

This place has been a thorn in my side ever since moving to JC a year and a half ago. It's in a great location, lovely space full of light, but their food is so consistently disappointing. It's one of those go-to places that's hard to avoid if you have a small group looking for brunch and don't want to go the diner route---really the only larger bistro cafe game in downtown JC. The problem, I've learned over probably half a dozen trips there, is that the vast majority of their menu is executed poorly. Grease separates out of mac & cheese, coffee is "meh", breakfast burritos go down like bricks and aren't even vaguely authentic in terms of the ingredients, hollandaise sauce is weak on the eggs benedict... the list goes on. Literally the only items on the menu that I found safe for those occasions when I do find myself at Beechwood are the lox bagel plate, garden variety eggs and bacon breakfast, or the waffle with fruit and cream. The last straw, and thus today's rant, is that when they apparently had to replace their waffle machine recently, they went from the standard round, plate-sized Belgian maker to some sort of square waffle-making contraption which puts out a waffle the size of 2 decks of playing cards---seriously half the size of the waffle one of our party ordered there a month ago. Went in this morning starving and craving a waffle and honestly thought they'd mistaken my order for something off of a kids' menu. They also had the nerve to charge the same exact same price ($8). A waffle is already pure profit given it's mostly air---even most college cafeterias can manage the "expense" of providing freshmen with a waffle making station. Super stingy all around. Conclusion: If you're looking for good cafe food and have the time to travel a little further, I'd find someplace in Hoboken (Bin 14 is great) or bite the bullet and head for Manhattan. And P.S. What the fork is up with their soap and candle "marketplace" up front? Really? That whole area could be counter seating... Just sayin'.

I usually go here for breakfast. Glad that they have lox platter because most of the breakfast menu is just average. Sandwiches for lunch are also just average. Wait staff is realllllly slow. Why the 3 stars? Because I like their music, I like the relaxed ambiance and its a safe place near the courthouse and train station that I can have a cup of coffee that's not a Starbucks. I love casual places like this. I want to like this place more. But they need more waitstaff and the food needs to be more delicious. I do not crave anything on the menu. The only thing I crave is their outdoor seating on a warm sunny day. That's not good enough for a restaurant.

My favorite place on that street. Even better than Marco and Pepe's across the street! The place is always packed on the weekends during brunch so usually tend to avoid during those hours. Lots of seating during dinner hours and suitable for a date dinner place. Ive tried almost everything on the menu but my fav dish is still probably the beechwood salad or the grilled salmon with a balasmic vinagrette reduction.

I had mixed feeling about this place in the past, but if you want a simple meal for a decent price, Beechwood cafe is one of my options in the downtown jersey city area. I was disappointed when they changed the recipe for the veggie burger, but when I decided to try something different on the menu, I was pleasantly surprised! The Beechwood salad is very tasty- with grilled chicken, goat cheese, bacon bits, topped with a honey vinaigrette. The portobello mushroom sandwich is one of my faves with a side of the broccoli salad! I'm giving it 3 stars only because I wouldn't necessarily say the food is gourmet quality, but for a quick and easy meal, it's a good choice especially for the limited options in jersey city.

OVERPRICED COFFEE... ...IN JC? Say it ain't so, Billy Bob! Oh, it's true. I walk in to try to support a local biz across the Hudson. It's hard for me to ever pass up on Chai, especially good Chai. Today was no different. I was skeptical at first because when asked what they used to make it, I was shown some Oregon Chai Concentrate taken from the fridge. The mashochistic side prevailed and I proceeded to order it anyway. 16oz plastic cup is filled with 50% cubed ice, then 50% milk up to ice level, 25% was Chai concentrate, 10% simple syrup, and 15% air. Yes, air. My $4.50 Iced Chai wasn't even filled to the top. I looked at my cup funny and knew I was in for a bad morning. They should call it a Casper Chai, for it looked pale white and not a hint of Chai. Wow, just wow. It tasted likewise: uber sweet with subtle hints of Chai. Lesson learned. Although their cake slices looked decent, they have lost me as a customer...forever. BTW, Iced Mocha: $5.50. P.S. I don't know if these prices are to compensate for loiterers mooching free WiFi but last I checked, WiFi isn't that expensive. Total came out to $4.50 after everything

I went here with a group of 3 other people for coffee and dessert ~9pm Friday. The location is convenient and inviting with indoor and outdoor seating. The place was fairly empty with only 2 other tables occupied. For drinks, 2 people ordered tea, one of which was chamomile. It tasted a bit on the minty side and nothing like chamomile tea. I ordered cappuccino - it was just ok, nothing spectacular, more like regular coffee with froth. (Plus just regular sugar or sweet n' low available.) I also ordered tiramisu. Though the presentation was nice, the tiramisu was mostly just mousse and not much else. Very bland! 1 person had the molten lava cake, which was more like a dried up inactive volcano lacking in any chocolate "lava". Another person ordered the key lime pie, which was the worst of the lot. He took one taste and didn't touch it thereafter. He said it was more like toothpaste. A friend also tasted it and agreed. Someone had asked the waitress whether something could be done with the key lime, but our waitress said that because the pie had been eaten already, she could not refund it. Note, 3/4th of the pie was still on he plate and would not have cost them anything to exchange it with something else. Beechwood is pretentious with their coffee/tea and desserts. Be warned NOT to go here even out of convenience in location. Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee/tea would have been more pleasant to the palate plus we would have saved money.

Delicious food. Intimate, cozy atmosphere... and thats not a nice way of saying "hole in the wall.". It has a very romantic yet elegant cafe feel, and at the same time still cozy. The staff is very friendly and I will frequent the restaurant much more often. Its also very affordable and also offers outdoor seating! They dont serve liqour, but you can BYOB!

Great place. Stopped here after the Science Museum and had a hard time deciding between the meals and the desserts. Finally decided on the veg quesedilla and a cappucino--both very yummy and cheap. The service was very good and the decor is a lot of old wood, wall paper that's the French "toile" theme from the 1700's I think, and stools that look like they found them in the basement when they took over the place. If I'm back in Jersey City and hungry, will def be back.

alright food decent location This place always looks so crowded when I walk over to get my haircut (Shampoo JC) once a month. Yesterday, I dragged my husband out with me to my hair appointment so that we could try out Beechwood for brunch. The cafe part of the restaurant is cute- they have a lot of cute knickknacks that would probably make good gifts for new homemakers or mother-in laws. The peach, ginger tea I had was pretty good. BUT- that's about it. The tea was the higlight. I ordered the beechwood salad and my husband ordered the corned beef hash. The salad was just "ok"- nothing great but the corned beef hash was pretty awful. It didn't even look like a hash. It looked like someone dumped all the has ingredients into a skillet, didn't stir it, waited for it to thicken and then scraped it off the pan and onto a plate. Poor husband was very disspointed when it was dropped off at our table. Overall- if you're there for pastries and a hot beverage, then you should be fine at Beechwood. If you're looking for a real brunch meal- go across the street to Marco & Pepe - order the mac and cheese and the eggs on toast!

For you JC brunchers... Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name...but chances are you'll find yourself chatting away half the day with the regulars. Beechwood is a neighborhood place where you can go where they may not know your name, but they're not too busy for you either...and with a to-go bar and a cafe, they cater to both parts of your Sybil-esque personality. If you're a grab and go'er, then you can get your caffeinated drink or juice at the coffee bar along with a fresh croissant, bagel or muffin. If you're more of the sedentary Sunday set, you can amble on in to the restaurant for a Southwestern-inspired brunch menu. Personally, I say go for the Green Chili burrito. You get your protein and verde all in one shot, and the burritos are grande enough to share. (I've also been known to dive into the biscuits and gravy. Lipids never had it so good) After you've paid your tab, walk back toward the main entrance and pick up something for your doggie, too. Keep in mind that it's not a purrfect world. Tuna for cats is sold separately. As other yelpers have mentioned, there is Wifi...but this isn't a dissertation diner. It's near a transportation hub, so there is a high volume of traffic. Visit one of the out of the way places if you feel your inner Cather calling.

This is a cafe/restaurant I am blessed to have in downtown Jersey City, for its food/atmosphere. But yet I have a love/hate relationship with Beechwood. I would almost call myself a regular - usually 3 out of 4 weekends a month for brunch. Food is definitely very good - i have never been disappointed by their food. Their drinks and desserts are very good as well (killer chocolate chip cookies). On the other hand, service is consistently BAD. I always expect at least one negative thing to happen each time I go. From getting the wrong check to being neglected...there is always SOMETHING. And yet i always go back.... I would give this place 5 stars based on atmosphere/food/quality/price range but service seriously sucks.

Bland brunch with no creativity and the menu was written like a complete fallacy. Got a breakfast burrito stating jalapenos green onions and tomatoes were in the burrito but then was told they were mixed in the salsa???!!!! Then a table sat next to me and their waitress told them that they don't even have jalapenos in the restaurant.... Yet they charge a dollar more for that sandwich . In fact the entire description of the burrito was inaccurate. My husband got the biscuits and gravy and it was served with ham gravy instead of sausage?? No where in America is biscuits and gravy made with ham. No where??!! The coffee was crap and when we informed the manager of the blatant inaccuracies if the menu she told us that we should have known . We informed her we never ate there before and she told us that they like to change up the menus and they have been making ham gravy for years. We informed her that if they change up the menu that they should inform patrons they are not getting what they ordered. Bizarre??!!! I have never heard of such a place??? She then tried to justify her crappy ham gravy which no one in America who orders biscuits and gravy expects to be served.

Desserts are mediocre, bland, and often stale. Stay Way from "toothpaste" key lime mouse pie, it really should be removed from the menu as it is just awful. Tried to return it but the Asian lady waitress politely said no returns. The chocolate lava is "ok" but there is no "lava" inside so they may as well really change the name to just plain chocolate cake. I would come here for just a quick order of ONLY regular coffee to go but not for sit down desserts. Avoid at all cost unless other cafes are packed.

I've been living on Grove St for the past 2 years. I've now only been twice. The first time I went, the look and feel of the place, made me think their was a touch of Manhattan in JC. That perception was correct. But it wasn't correct about Beechwood. Unfortunately, beyond the look and feel, Beechwood is basically a medicore cafe. The food is average, the coffee is not good, and the service is overall not friendly and dis-satisfying. I really wish Beechwood was a cheaper version of Marco e Pepe or replica of a west village cafe it looks to elimulate--but it isn't.

I MADE AN ACCOUNT JUST TO WRITE THIS. let me just tell you all, i consider myself to be VERy generous when it comes to restaurants- always giving them the benefit of the doubt. i'm definitely not one of those that like to complain about service/food. a few of my friends hate going to restaurants with me because i dont like to give less than 20% tip wherever i go. BUT.... OH, LET ME TELL YOU... "eek! Me thinks not" is right. i have NEVER beeen SOOO disappointed about a restaurant in my life. yea, the place looks cute. real cute. but.. the service was horrible. it really was. i had to ask TWICE for someone to take our order. the manager was completely rude. but fine, OKAY. that can happen. we get our food... (which did come out rather quickly) we're all enjoying... then my friend finds hair in her wrap. so, we quietly call over the waitress- definitely don't want to make a scene. she says sorry and asks if there's anything else we want. no, not really. lost appetite. so, very politely we tell her that its totally fine, not to worry. we ask for the check. and we're thinking there's NO WAY they would charge us for the wrap. but of course they did. so i ask if its in their policy to charge us this... (cause maybe... justttt mayyyyyybe for some reason, it is) but no, so they void. we pay for it.. and we're sitting there... uh, obviously i want my change. seriously, 7-10 minutes later... waitress comes over empty handed asking, "Did u need change?" seriously? that change was 20% or more. .... seriously? my reply: i had to pause.. "its ok. just keep it" and left.

Cute little spot for lunch, brunch or just coffee with a friend....not too many places to charge your electronic device but that doesn't stop the customers from doing so. The service is fast and respectful to your privacy. The food was delicious! Took a friend for her bday and she loved it...although it is a tiny place and can make some people feel like giants! Either way, it wasn't too tight to enjoy. :)

It's a cute little cafe for a quick bite to eat. Since it's a cafe, their menu is small. Their food is simple and tasty. Not really a place to go in large groups (I'd say a max. of 4). omfg. has quality. has variety. has BRUNCH. three best things everrr. all their dishes are very hearty and filling portions. i absolutely LOVE brunch/breakfast foods, and this place is very near and dear to me. i've gotten the typical breakfast foods here and they are all great quality and you can tell from the waitstaff and style of the diner; that this place really prides itself on its image. many loyal customers (hello). my personal favorite are their tortilla wrap breakfast burritos. gosh. such fresh vegetables in everything and minimal oil...which i absolutely love since i can't stand oily/fake/preserved breakfast foods besides cold cereal. their green salsa they use has that spicy/sweet flavuh and you crave for days....can dip anything in that and it gives you a real bang. the pricing is average for any city brunch place; but the portions definitely are huge. it actually has its own mini-market with random goods and baked goods...and then the restaurant portion which is very cute and warming, cozy and leisurely-inviting to the brunch-ers lazy days. warmly lit and plenty of windows all around. outdoor seating as well, so it's quite nice. waitstaff is very friendly/local and quick to serve. love the food. love brunch. love the cute interior. love the prices. a must try if you crave quality brunch food/portions/lazy days! i actually like this better than the famed "the grey dog" brunch-ery in the city that i frequent often...although the grey dog also has huge portions, the prices are more, and the taste level is not as juicy (grey dog's stuff is a bit dry) as this place..

This place grew on me... At first I was all this place is just expensive for regular old diner food and fancy ass coffee. And I was right. But once I sat there for a while I figured it was nice to just be sitting for a while in a nice place with relatively decent food. Some items stand out. The HUEVOS RANCHEROS in particular please try it. Also the corn beef hash has a spin that you will have to see to believe. the food in truth (for breakfast anyway) is pretty good. And I hate to say it I love the giant cappuccinos. I say try it for yourself, obviously its not the brownstone...... But the brownstone is the brownstone.

Thank god for places like this. Its AWFUL. Just terrible all around. BUT, people fill it up on the regular, leaving better places less busy. Thanks for that, everyone who likes this dump. I've been here about 10 times. WHy? Because I lived across the street and have a problem where I keep making the same mistake over and over again. There is also not many places in the neighborhood to get some of the things they offer. It doesn't matter, I've regretted it every time I've gone in there. Even getting a muffin is a miserable experience. I'll detail below why this place stinks. The Service: Non-Existent. They're jerks once they finally decide to acknowledge your presence, too. How someone working a cash register in a glorified coffee shop can act like they're better than anyone else is beyond me, but they pull it off to perfection. And forget sitting down to eat unless you have at least an hour to eat a lousy breakfast. I'd occasionally go in for a carrot muffin if I was in a rush and didn't have time to eat anywhere else and it was always such a hassle. Me: "can you please put some butter on the muffin for me" Three different people behind the counter on different occasions: "well, i'm not going to butter it for you, but i'll put some butter in the bag and you can butter it yourself" Really? Am I at the coolest looking Dunkin Donuts ever? What is this place? The Muffin Nazi? Another Time I got some soup there and asked for a few dinner rolls. In the snootiest of French-accented retorts, the cashier denied my simple request because "eh, if it gets busy i don't want to run out, so no you cannot" Really? And another time we missed brunch at Marco and Pepe and decided to make French Toast with croissants at home and went to buy all the croissants they had left at Beechwood. Now, I told them that I wanted all of them and for some reason she didn't want to sell me the 14 or so that they had. I reminded her that it was the end of the day and nobody would probably want a croissant until the next day when these would have been old. I felt as though I was doing them a favor, taking all of these soon to be day-old pastries. She didn't seem to think so and charged me full price (like 2.50 or 3.00 each) for all of them. I bought them while i simultaneously laughed in her face and told her how much I loathed this awful place. The Food: Hot garbage. From the outside, the place looks like its going to have delicious food. Trust me, it doesn't. You'd think a breakfast place would be able to scramble an egg, right? Well, they can't. Nothing on this menu is up to par. Just lousy, run-of-the-mill industrial tasting crap. Oh, and its over-priced, too. The LIE: Beechwood cafe is literally a giant lie. Its a facade. Look at it from the street. Its inviting! It looks like it will be filled with rainbows, unicorns, smiles, and perfectly scrambled eggs! Its not. Its all a lie. I've never had a beef with a restaurant owner before, but I hope that the lady who owns that place goes out of business, destroys her credit and loses her house. Its such a shame that a place with as much potential as Beechwood is so poorly executed. If you gave this place a good review, you either know the owner, work there, or have HORRIBLE taste in restaurants.

Wow, so many negative reviews on the service and food, Beechwood! I am surprised! I used to walk by daily en route to the path while it was under construction & I wonder what it was going to be, & was not disappointed when it finally opened! I picked up food here all the time when I did not feel like cooking since I passed it on the way home. Now since I have moved I have to walk a block & half out of my way, but I still hit them up b/c it is fresh & affordable. I love the korean steak sandwich and usually opt for the broccoli salad as my side. They have really yummy salads- I usually go for the mixed green or the baby spinach. BLT sandwich is good as well. I think I have only tried the pasta once. I do think it's odd that most of the breakfast dishes are tex mex, but I'm not complaining! I love that the baked goods are discounted at night and would scoop them up more often if I didn't have to watch my figure. The wait does not bother me because I enjoy checking out all the cute rustic kitchen accessories they have in the store front, and I amuse myself reading the business cards and fliers people leave up front. I like the interior although I feel it has more of a breakfast / lunch spot vibe. However I am happy they are open for dinner because that is when I'm stopping by after a long day to pick up food to go!

Went to Beechwood at 8am today (Wednesday), no waitress on hand, so after waiting ten minutes we went up & ordered coffee from the takeout bar and sat down in the cafe, waiting for the waitress. 25 minutes later - still no coffee, we were told that there'd been a problem with the expresso machine. So ten minutes later the waitress had showed up, and we finally got our coffee - but to prevent further delay, the three of us ordered breakfast at the takeout bar. However they brought over only two orders...and we were the only people sitting in the cafe! So we ordered another dish, and shared what we had until it turned up. The staff barely (and grudgingly) apologized, and even then they didnt ask up how the food was, or asked if we needed any more coffee during the breakfast....nada. The food was lukewarm and average, but it was the service that really was terrible. I know they don't have much competition downtown, so they can probably coast on service like this, but we'd make an effort to go to Madame Claude's or the Kitchen Cafe in future, this was such a bad experience.

Local jaunt. Not too bad, though any time I've tried to be nice (which is a normal personality trait of mine!), I just get a cold face staring back at me. The food is pretty tasty, but I don't think it's worth the price. Screw the burritos being huge...the simple egg sandwiches are way bigger than I can fit my mouth into! (That doesn't mean, however, that they are worth $4.50) Though maybe having wireless (and especially when it's not busy) is a definite perk. Terrible coverage outside, though.

Best place in Jersey City to get an espresso drink! They oftentimes will even create coffee art with the foam! Great country decor, fresh ingredients, wifi, and outdoor seating. I recommend the Beechwood Salad and the Veggie Burger. Service is usually a little slow but they're mostly friendly to you if you're friendly to them. Thanks to Yelp, I've found it's BYOB, which will definitely make my next brunch there even better!

Pretty sweet bunch spot! I had the eggs Benedict as I do everywhere.. Pretty yummy, potatoes that came with it were decent too... They have this bowl that has tortilla strips with guacomole, tomatoes, etc. with poached eggs in it... Actually looked pretty good and healthy -ish. Good selection in the menu, and I definitely recommend this place for brunch!

Went here one night for dinner. Staff was really nice. Had the veggie lasagna, came with a house salad. It was good, nothing particularly special. The decor was cute. I didn't get any tea or coffee so I can't say how that is or isn't but for what I wanted it was good. A little bit more money than I wanted to spend on dinner at a little cafe but nothing outrageous. I'll go back. I think they have WiFi...and Ill try some tea/coffee.

This is a grat place for an affordable, casual dinner. I came here with three of my girlfriends and we had a great time relaxing, chatting, and drinking wine. The penne with pesto and the penne vodka are both great dishes, though the chicken they added tasted a bit over processed. I also had the chocolate cake which was divine. You can't beat the prices and the place has a friendly vibe.

Beechwood is great. I've been here many, many times, and I have been pleased with everything I've had, including cappucinos and coffee. When you first enter Beechwood, there is a small shop with dishes, soaps, and other home items for sale, but it doesn't interfere with the "flow" of the restaurant. Immediately opposite the entrance is where the food takes center stage: a cornucopia of pastries sits behind a gleaming glass case, and coffee is available to go at this same counter. To the right of the entry sits the cafe, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner, depending on when you stop in. I have only been in the cafe on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and have found it pretty busy for breakfast and lunch. No one rushes you, but it certainly isn't the time to go with your laptop to sit for a few hours. It is probably very different M-Th, but since I have not been there at those times, I can't speak to that specifically. Service is very good to excellent--I've never been ignored or forgotten at the Beechwood, even when it is very busy. I can say that the Beechwood is an excellent addition to the downtown Jersey City area. Way back before Beechwood was opened, Marco y Pepe (across the street) used to serve breakfast every morning, and in general, offer a more cafe-like atmosphere. When it stopped opening for breakfast every single day (not just weekends), I was disappointed, but clearly Beechwood has stepped in to fill the void. Great place.

I've only ever been here for Sunday brunch, but it's a nice spot. The menu is simple, the food is good, and the atmosphere is nice. A little pricey but overall a good spot, especially if you can sit outside.

My wife and I went for dinner and it was fabulous! We had their nachos for appetizer and the portions were big. For entrees we got the korean bbq flank steak sandwich and chicken pot pie. The chicken pot pie was good but nothing special. The steak sandwich was pretty AWESOME. We didn't realize it's a BYOB but we'll be back with a bottle of wine next time for sure!

I went there twice in a span of 2 weeks, the first time was a really good experience with good service and food but the 2nd time we went it was atrocious, everything from the service to the food was bad, the waitress (only one there) told me that the manager didn't come in today and she didn't know where she was, hence the lack of strawberries on the pancakes we ordered, and the breakfast burrito I ordered came cold due to probably waiting too long for it to be brought to our table. I witnessed 2 tables walk off and they didn't even notice it. It didn't even seem like the same place as the first time we went, I really don't know what happened that day but I felt sorry for the waitress, she was swamped and literally had about 11 tables to cover and there was only 1 bus boy as well. Will I go back? I do't know, that last experience was probably the worst I have ever experienced in a restaurant.

Just wanted to update and say I've now had the Huevos Rancheros and they were surprisingly excellent. They weren't exactly traditional in that they were a stack of tortilla chips served in a bowl with the eggs on top, but the green chili salsa they were served in with delicious, with just the perfect amount of spice and tang for the dish. Also, the slightly unorthodox plating allowed for a better dispersal of eggs, tortilla and sauce in each bite than when it's plated the typical way. Maybe the latin dishes here are better than I thought . . .

I like this place a lot! It's casual and comfortable, though I've never been here at a busy time (Sat/Sun morning for brunch), so I can't agree or disagree w/ the previous reviewers. I've only been here for dinner, and I like the Korean-style Kalbi sandwich - it's scrumptious! Also, I've ordered the chili, which was absolutely perfect on a snowy, winter night. They bring you all the fixins on the side, and it was perfect.

The first area of Beechwood that you walk into is their coffee shop/cute home goods emporium. This place has good coffee, absolutely, and tasty pastries, and the aesthetic of the store is sunny and sophisticated--just lovely. If Beechwood was only this room, and their prices were just a tiny bit lower, I'd give it five stars. The second room is their "cafe". You can still get the great coffee and pastries here, and there's free Wifi. Their menu is really hit or miss, however. Their sandwiches are really quite good, I've particularly enjoyed the roasted veggies and goat cheese panino (or something like that). Their breakfast is bizarre and scattered--breakfast burritos are warm tortillas (yum) filled with an ENORMOUS block of scrambled eggs (too much egg, too much EGG!) and corn salsa, with a side of guacamole--not necessarily the worst thing in the world, but not really great and sort of just random ingredients thrown together in the hopes that they make a "burrito". Then there's items that piss me off, like a six dollar bowl of granola--that's six dollars for the granola, 7.50 if you want it with fruit and yogurt. 7. 50 to get a glorified, granolified bowl of cereal ? I guess I don't know the "granola market", but it seems excessive to me--call me a curmudgeon. Lastly there's the issue of service--I rarely comment on the service in restaurants on this site because it can vary so wildly from day to day, but sadly there is something eerily constant about the lousy service at Beechwood, and I can't figure it out. I've been going for a year and there's been a lot of different people on the wait staff but without fail every time there's an awkward dance at the beginning of my meal where I wait 10 minutes, then end up getting up and getting my own menu, then they shoot me a hurt look and I feel bad, then the service continues to be an extremely weird game of trying to get them to look at me when I want coffee refills, the check, anything. To be fair, it feels like it's understaffed and the perhaps not the incompetence of the particular waiters/waitresses, but it really affects the quality of ones visit, you know? In conclusion, I will continue to come here and remain devoted to their coffee and treats, but wish they could get the rest of their act together. And for the best food in Jersey City at night, definitely definitely cross the street and go to the excellent, delicious and beautiful Marco and Pepe.

I'd like to say they are consistent but that isn't always the case. I've had their breakfast wrap done about 4 different ways and the last time I had it, I asked for extra jalepenos (as it is one of the ingredients listed in the descrption) to only have someone tell me that the breakfast burrito does not have jalepenos even though the menu has it on the description. okay....so does the lobster bisque have lobster in it? weird. I also had a couple next to me point out that their side of bacon looked like frozen bacon fried together because they were all stuck and it just looked like one imobile piece of meat. Tortilla chips can be stale too.

I was glad when this place opened because I'm always glad for a new place to go with my laptop and study. Beechwood is suffering from a mild attack of multiple personality disorder: it's a market selling expensive candles! It's a coffee shop! It's a restaurant! But in general I've never felt rushed when sitting for hours with one (admittedly huge) cup of tea while others around me are eating their table-service lunches. There's free wifi (although the outlet situation is not good), and the food is tasty and less overpriced than the coffee to go. Sit on the cushioned benches lining the back wall if you're going to be there for hours as the other chairs in the dining room don't exactly promote circulation in your ass. Recent "star" sighting: Top Model Eva (that is, if the people at the next table over are to be believed).

This spot is a great, relaxing and community oriented spot, great for breakfast , lunch or a snack. You often see your neighbors stopping by with their dogs for a cup of coffee, or family in for a weekend brunch. Its the kind of spot you want to sit by the window or outside with some coffee and watch the goings on in the neighborhood. So the food is not extraordinary but is always good. Their Mac Beech Egg sandwich is quite tasty and they always have a nice fruit bowl. Also they have some great choc chip cookies for a snack. If you are looking for trendy and upscale you've hit the wrong spot, sit back for some comfort food and some great people watching.

This is another place that needs to work on customer service. Last week, a friend and I walked in say 3:29pm and were handed a brunch menu. And, with that, the waitress said "you have one minuet to order" - I chuckled, but she was serious. She said, the chef wont take orders after 3:30 and she can't argue with him, I am sorry, but that is lame. If I walked in on time, then I should get whats on that menu, or hand me a dinner menu. But don't tell me I have 1 minuet to order. So, I walked out.. On my way I said "I am sure 2 lost customers is not a issue, as I see you guys are so busy" - the place was empty. Don't expect a smile regardless of time of day.

Beechwood is a breath of fresh air in JC, NJ. Enter into an inviting retail area with yummy candles, pottery and unessecarry but "gotta have 'em items", Beechwood is a William Sonoma meets a must eat eatery in JC. Staff is always friendly and personable. Bakery, breakfast, lunch and dinner items always fresh and savory. The dining area is so comfortable and the windows afford you a view of the passersby along Grove. My fave is the Korean ribs, the always strong, perky and aromatic coffee (once again, a reminder of my Aunt Helen). Beechwood has all the personality, upscale charm and taste of any Manhattan cafe, right there in JC, NJ...as u can tell I'm into the abbreviation thing. I mean after all I'm a busy yelper now and time is money. Well, ok, not so much money, cuz nobody is paying me anything...but you get the idea. Great food, awesome staff and a fabulous place to have a quick cup off java or a nice leisurely meal. Get your New York or NJ butt on down to Beechwood...oh, and the cornish game hen is fabulana....I mean where can you get a cornish game hen. The country of Cornish?

I really enjoy brunch at Beechwood! Be warned that the service is fairly slow, but I go to brunch to relax and spend time with friends (which, I mean, who doesn't?) so I don't mind the extended dining experience. The menu has just enough choices to be interesting but not enough to be overwhelming. I've been twice now and have gotten the Huevos Rancheros and a breakfast sandwich and both were delicious! Also, the apple pie though- it's incredible. In my opinion, apple pie is a breakfast, brunch, lunch, AND dinner food. Try it. They have BYOB, so we brought a bottle of champagne, they brought us a mason jar of orange juice, and we wasted away the morning. A great brunch experience :-)

Beechwood is a cute cafe in a great location. I come here for brunch pretty often because they have cornmeal pancakes (I'm gluten intolerant) and because one of the servers is so nice (Australian and she always says "that's all right!" instead of you're welcome). The food here, however, is not as nice. It's consistent though so I always know that the bacon is going to be stiff (don't order it) and the side of maple syrup is cold (ask for them to warm it up) and the cornmeal pancakes are dry (but tasty). I enjoy the side sausage and my boyfriend rally likes the chicken & waffles (or waffles & chicken as it's listed on the menu). People rave about the coffee (I'm not a coffee drinker really) but I really enjoy the tea's.

A great cafe to check out. I love the place because you can grab one of their great coffees to go, or you can sit down in the dining area and enjoy a whole meal. The service at the counter or dining always seems to be on point. The decor of the place is very cool and fits the Jersey City market perfectly.

Very friendly and quick service but the food is ok. I do enjoy the teas and coffees that they make since it's very aromatic and the teas are light (you can taste the flavor and they barely, if they even do, put sugar in it). The service is very quick, even on a busy weekend brunch hour but the food is just mediocre. My friend got the huevos rancheros and the nachos on the bottom are way too soggy and the overall dish was just very soupy. I got the avocado Benedict on wheat bread and that was well done. The eggs were poached to perfection and the toast was thick enough to support the avocado and eggs. However I was not a big fan of the potato wedges that accompanied the dish, they were cut too unevenly and a little soggy as well. The chai latte was delicious though.

4 stars for atmosphere 3 stars for food Overall probably a 3.5 but I'm rounding down since I wasn't too impressed with the food. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros. We were surprised when it was served with tortilla chips. Regardless he said it was pretty good so I guess their twist on huevos rancheros (although unique) actually works! I ordered an egg white and hash combo with a side of corned beef. Everything was mediocre. The corned beef was dry (a little like eating beef jerky). Overall the Beechwood Cafe is cute and conveniently located near the Grove Street Path which makes it a practical place to meet with friends. Also, there's less of a wait here compared to other restaurants in the area during prime brunch hour (which is a plus). Outdoor seating is available if you prefer fresh air with your coffee!

Really nice place for a brunch and we weren't turned away for having a stroller like some other restaurants in Jersey City do. We ordered the huevos rancheros, waffles and french toast and all were pretty good, although my husband mentioned he had had better huevos rancheros elsewhere. We were visiting friends and decided to eat out with our pup. This restaurant allowed us to eat outside if our dog stayed on the outside of their roped seating area. Apparently NJ changed the law and pets are not allowed at restaurants even if you sit outside. There was a table close to the roped barrier so we sat there. We were the only ones out there on a Saturday night. The menu is an interesting Korean fusion collection with kimchi burgers and bulgolgi tacos. I decided to get the hot stone bowl bulgolgi. The meat was good but the dish was mostly large pieces of veggies.

Beechwood Cafe is a small, trendy spot on Grove across from City Hall. They have a nice selection of teas and coffee, along with a food menu. What they do, they do well: the teas are fresh and the food is tasty and satisfying (in particular, the Beechwood Salad wrap: mixed greens, roasted red pepper, walnuts, goat cheese, grilled chicken and bacon). Why only 3 stars? The atmosphere, drinks, and food don't justify the price. That wrap ran $12. Other places can do what Beechwood Cafe does better, and for less. You're paying for location, more than anything else.

Yup, A-OK pretty much describes my experience here. The long communal table is cool, as well as the decor. It manages to be a little hip without looking like it's trying. The fried chicken with biscuits was the best thing we ordered. The fried chicken was solid, and so were the spreads the biscuits came with. I don't think the biscuits themselves were that fresh though, as they started getting a little rubbery/spongy a few minutes after sitting on the plate when they cooled down. The wife got eggs over easy, potato hash, and mushrooms. We expected the potato hash to have....something other than potatoes. Onions? Maybe a couple peppers? Nope. Just very plain potatoes. The mushrooms didn't really have any flavor either. I mean, they weren't bad. They just weren't great. Service was good. Bro was attentive. That hot chocolate though....let me tell you. I'm not even normally a hot chocolate fan, but this stuff was seriously delicious. If you ever come here, you should probably order it.

Solid eats. Service lacked, and their coffee was horrible. They should reach out to JC's master coffee roasters modcup and bring something in that is super local and delicious. A great coffee probably would have elevated this meal for me to 5 stars. Get: the fried chicken and waffles and USE the spicy jalapeño mayo WITH the syrup. Seriously. The cornmeal pancakes were also heavenly. I wasn't expecting the nutty crunchy center of the pancakes but I loved it. If you didn't like nuts, you would be surprised but not in a good way. Only mentioning this as I do not recall reading nuts with this pancake. Their menu layout is a little hard to read. We got a seat right away on a Saturday at their communal farm table. It was a little wide but I love this kind of seating. I'd surly come back as this is a solid local brunch option. I'll just grab a modcup coffee Togo beforehand down the street from The kitchen at grove street.

My BFF and I had originally gone to the brownstone for brunch but quickly decided to reconsider after we were put at number 40 on the list. I'm not going to question why it's the only diner in town... but we DO have a lot of other places to brunch, so that's what we decided to do. Beechwood it was! I had actually only been here once when it FIRST opened and had bought a cookie or something. But my BFF had been the week before. The place was very busy when we arrived, but we still managed to have a fairly short wait. Service was also seemed quick. It seemed that the rancheros huevos nachos were the hot item, I must have seen the dish on nearly every table. My BFF ordered it, I got eggs benedict. I have to say, I was a little jealous of her rancheros huevos nachos... she said they were delicious. But then, my eggs benedict were nothing to look down at. Also perfect. While it is a little bit on the pricer side, it was worth every bite. I didn't realize it was BYOB, and next time I will be bringing a bottle (or two) of champagne. Hello mimosas!

Yelp is right on the money on this place. It's a solid meal, just overpriced for what you get. I actually love the space, a long farm table for family style seating with smaller tables surrounding it. A huge window overlooking Grove St adds to this rustic eatery. The few times I've come for brunch, I've never left amazed or completely satisfied. A little too bland, with food not made from the heart; generic. Yet, why was I paying trendy food prices? I don't mind paying $12-$15 for brunch items, they just need to live up to the standards. I recently went with a curry chicken salad wrap. It was good, very simple, nothing mind blowing. Not a a lot of chicken salad for the $$. The broccoli salad side was good, but again, you could give a lil' bit more for what you're charging me. My most recent visit (ahem, today), I went with one of the Korean dishes: the bim bim bowl. A large bowl filled with veggies and topped with a fried egg; I opted for the $2 additional tofu. It was solid, but lacked flavor and could have used some siracha (only tobasco. It was quite a lot of food, but then again It was $14. I by no means think this place doesn't serve up some solid fare, I just think they may cut a few corners and the saved cost isn't transferred to the customer.

Food was good, hence the 3 stars. The green chili breakfast burrito was very tasty, especially the green sauce that came with it. However, service was really slow, even with very few people in the cafe. Took over 20 minutes after ordering for us to get iced coffee, which came well after our food and tasted bitter.

Tried this place for brunch last weekend. There was a bit of a wait but lucked out by getting a spot near the window at a cozy table overlooking the street. Extensive brunch menu but NYC prices. While a major shout out to the quick service, the food was mediocre. I got a California omelet ($11) that came with a piece of toast and some potato scramble. Nothing special though the omelet did have a good veggie to cheese to egg ratio. The potato mash was literally just potato smashed up and one piece of toast is a let down. My boyfriend got steak and eggs and though no comments during the meal other than "good" - he was sick (and not the fun kind of sick) the rest of the day. I will not be making a return trip unless I need a reason for a sick day.

I've been there on busy Sunday mornings and have never waited long for a table. The staff is courteous and friendly; many will remember familiar faces by their favorite meals. My 3 stars are for the service and price. Our waitress was very attentive and we received our food right away. However, the food is meh. My friend and I ordered two dishes and said we would share. She ordered the seafood scampi and I ordered the penne ala vodka pasta. I tasted my friends seafood scampi and it was pretty good. My penne ala vodka was gross. The spoonful of pasta that I had was drowned in some kind of thick sauce with cream and quite frankly it didn't even taste like vodka sauce. Not sure if this was a homemade version but it was just awful and waaayyy tooo much sauce for the little amount of pasta. I ended up scrapping it and ordering the seafood scampi which was much more flavorful.

I usually go here for brunch or lunch. However, I recently came for dinner with a friend. I've dined her numerous times so its safe to say that it's one of my favorite places to eat. When you walk in, they have somewhat of a bakery stand where you can take out and a sort of bar stool eating area on your left. To the right, you have the area to sit and dine and there's also outdoor seating. The windows are nice and big to view what's happening outside and the decor inside the restaurant is somewhat vintage but simple. The music is always great from old school r&b to classic rock to 80s, 90s and today. Anything on the menu is delicious. I promise that!

Beechwood Cafe is a very busy cafe on the corner of Grove Street facing City Hall. It's in a primetime location. Every time I passed by on the weekends, I saw a steady crowd inside during brunch. When I lived nearby, during the weeknights, there were small parties dispersed throughout as I passed by after work. So one weekend, I decided to give this place a try for brunch. Note that this place is BYOB as are many cafes in downtown JC. This isn't too useful for the daytime, but should be noted when coming through during dinner hours. We were seated promptly in the larger dining room of the two. I glanced over the menu and observed that the pricing of many things was pretty good. What caught my eye was the Chicken Platter with Waffle for $12, but it only came with half a waffle and 2 pieces of fried chicken. It was a little disappointing because of the uneven portions for the meal itself. This was accompanied by a spicy jalapeño mayonnaise for dipping the chicken and also warm maple syrup to drizzle over the waffle. The chicken was juicy, but the batter wasn't too heavy on one piece so it fell off easily when biting into it. Better if both were consistenly battered and fried. It also needed a bit more seasoning, as it tasted just like regular batter to me and could have benefited from a dash of salt and pepper. I suppose this is what the jalapeño dip is for, but I would have liked to the flavor of the chicken to stand up on its own. The waffle wasn't memorable, it was a bit on the dryer side and while moist on the inside, it was a little on the heavier side and not so fluffy. Because of this, I focused more on the chicken and this eventually got cold when I went back to finish it off. Overall service was adequate. Water glasses were filled in a timely fashion. It was a little slow getting the check towards the end because there were alot of customers coming in and out and many more waiting to be seated.

I've been to Beechwood about 30+ times, but only for brunch. I really like the decor. There's a huge farm table in the center with several tables lining the perimeter. The tables are placed in a way so you don't feel crowded and on top of the person next to you. The place gets great natural light since they have mega huge windows and on the corner. It's a great spot for reading if you arrive fairly early when it's quiet and not peak brunch hour. During the summer/spring, it has great outdoor seating in a prime people-watching area of downtown JC. The wait staff is pretty nice and attentive and mindful of refilling your coffee. With that said, this place has the most average tasting food. It's definitely not bad food, it's just meh. if I had the ingredients at my disposal, I could probably make everything on their menu without even looking up a recipe. I'm never amazed with anything I have there, but I eat it, and I'm okay with it. The reason I have gone there so much, or will continue going there is because it's easy and I'm hungry. I never had to wait for a table for brunch, the food comes out fairly fast and it's pretty consistent (even though it's average, it's consistently average).

I have eaten here many times - and my experience is that some things are OK, and a few things are awesome. One of my all-time favorite breakfasts is their take on Huevos Rancheros -- it's in a bowl, with beans on the bottom, piled with eggs (I get mine scrambled instead of fried), guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo and chips. And a yummy salsa verde (which I order on the side so as not to overwhelm all the other ingredients). This particular dish gets 5 stars. As does the cinnamon bun, which is perfection. And the coffee is great. The pancakes don't really do it for me here, but the french toast is good (although not swoonworthy), and as I recall, the omelettes are fine. And it's a great, open, airy room, with friendly service (though not always super-speedy, but that's not the vibe of the place).

I love beechwood! At first I had hesitations about coming here and stayed away. It looked like it might be too expensive or that the vibe would be weird but once I gave it a try I fell in love. I've been here now for brunch, lunch and dinner so I feel like it has passed all of my usual tests. The service is fast and friendly - the food was always fresh. We've come here with a group and also as just a couple even when you sit at the long table they leave you enough room so that you won't feel like you're right next to your neighbors. All the servers that I've had have been so helpful in giving suggestions and my favorite thing of all I can order french fries with breakfast! This is my favorite brunch spot in jersey city. It's not too fussy it just feels like a nice neighborhood spot!

This was a totally regular dining experience. Not every spot needs to be spectacular and this place was fine. I got the rice and egg bowl. It filled me up and came out quickly, not surprising as the joint was empty around 3 pm on a Wednesday. The interior is super cute and I'm guessing the outdoor tables have a decent waiting period during the summer months. If you want a quick bite with a variety of food options (brunch, Asian cushion, burger) this is your place.

I have visited Beechwood for breakfast several times. My first visit or two was not terribly impressive, but recently it seems to have gotten its act together. Or maybe it's just that I found something I really like. I haven't been that impressed with their omelettes or the chilaquiles, but the Lox Plate is delicious. The place is cute and is a decent option in downtown Jersey City, particularly on a nice morning when you can sit on the sidewalk and watch the passing people and dogs. Service is inconsistent and never exceptional.

I'm giving this place 1 star for the ambiance. It's sunny, great location, nice decor. Other than that, nothing impressive in the slightest. I've been here about 4 times prior to today's visit, all of which were just okay. Food was mediocre, pancakes a bit runny, drinks were quite good. I came back today to have a quick lunch and while sitting at the table fairly close to the counter I could hear the staff talking about ME in very loud voices. I find this unacceptable in ANY restaurant, especially if all I had done was asked for a lunch menu, which hardly seems taxing. I understand if a staff is busy, it is difficult to balance so many customers. But NEVER is it okay to voice this out loud in the customer's presence. Not sure if I want to come back again.

Beechwood is a very decent restaurant. During weekends, it always looks busy but quite mysteriously you always find a place to sit. The coffee, cookies, cupcakes are great and the food is usually good too. I like their eggs Benedict and chicken and waffles the most. Service is usually fast and efficient.

Delicious!! I've walked past beechwood a million times, and it was only when my girlfriend requested we try somewhere different in the area did I decide to finally stop and have a taste. Certainly was not disappointed, we sat outside, waitress was Giovanna(sp) who was very sweet. I had the meatloaf sandwich with pesto pasta and the iced chai latte (which comes in a cute mason jar mug) the meatloaf sandwich was delicious! My friend had the Bulgogi and OJ, I tasted her beef and it was pretty ok. She enjoyed it. I will definitely return to try the other offerings on the menu!

We came here for Saturday brunch and all left quite content and impressed. I had the chicken which was deliciously juicy and biscuits were buttery. No trouble finishing both biscuits They also have the basics down, good coffee, good freshly squeezed orang juice. I was struck by how charming the atmosphere was, especially the sidewalk cafe. The service was great, too. I met a colleague there for a lunch meeting and I had the hummus platter, which featured warm pita triangles, baby spinach leaves, and a dish of cucumbers, carrot sticks and black olives. There was also a really nice dressing to put on it. They had a nice assortment of teas, and a good selection of simple goodies to share or take with you. My colleague and I shared a mocha cupcake. The prices were very reasonable, and it was so close to the Path that this place can easily become a place to catch up with friends and have meetings regularly. The neighborhood is very Village-like and trendy. I'll definitely be coming back for more!

After many many visits here, I've decided to give my review. Prior to Sunday, I would normally give Beechwood 5 stars throughout. But on Sunday, without the manager there, who typically runs the team, the service was a bit mismanaged. It's all about the approach. Upon arriving the hostess commented that there would be a wait in such a fashion that she was basically suggesting that we leave. It was probably not her intention but that's just the way it came out. The next three groups behind us had the same surprised reaction. The hostess also did not offer the open window seat, open bar seat, or any of the open communal tables to anyone. Therefore at one point there were 8 people in the waiting area before the patrons spoke up. One group said, can I sit at the window, and the hostess, seemingly taken back, responded, "oh, sure, I didn't know if you wanted to sit there." Finally when we waited 15 minutes, I asked why there were 6 empty seats (that could accommodate 3 groups of 2 people) open. And she said, oh, you could sit there if you want. Wow, we just wasted that waiting time. Here's my question. If you have a large communal table in the middle of the dining area, AND you have seats all along the table, why are they not seating diners at those seats? Why do they feel the need to keep 4 feet of distance between diners, particularly on a busy brunch day? Now, having said all that, the service was remarkably slow which is uncharacteristic of our experiences there. and the very kind waitress did apologize for the slowness. I really have to chalk it up to the manager/owner not being there. The food still gets 5 stars, and that is probably the most important thing. UPDATE: one week later (on a busy sunday), still no manager, service so slow and waitress missed many orders. This place needs HELP ASAP!!!!

My gf and I grabbed a Saturday lunch/brunch here. When you walk inside, there is a wall that has the menu typed on it. Unfortunately these items were not available for brunch in the outdoor seating section - doesn't really make much sense to me especially since there were some really alluring items on the inside menu. Anyway...my gf got the beechwood chicken wrap which was surprisingly delicious considering how simple it was. I got the fried chicken and waffle and was not disappointed. The waffle comes with a thick, cloudy maple syrup that was simply one of the best I have ever had. The waffle was beautifully browned and the fried chicken was really good. My only gripe on the meal was that the two pieces of chicken were not all that meaty. Overall it was a good experience, but I will wait to rave about it until I visit a few more times.

When will this place ever get great? When will I stop being surprised that my egg and bacon sandwich plus coffee/latte somehow always costs $10+? The last time I asked for it on a roll, it came on a whole wheat un-toasted bagel. For $5 at Wonder Bagels, WHATEVER, but making me break the bigger bills for an overpriced fail? Annoying. I always feel like this place has so much potential- good location, interior is comfortable, and the menu is simple but nice enough, but it is always just treading this mediocre line. Staff are not unfriendly but are not always particularly friendly either. Seems like it could and should be a casual cafe, where you grab a coffee and sit around, but you need to sit down for table service if you want to take it that far. Really? But I do like their egg sandwiches....

Go here often not because the food or service is exceptional but because it's EASY. There's usually always a place to sit (unless it's a weekend, then it's cutthroat), they have highchairs, and tons of options. The Korean steak sandwich is consistently edible, the cookies are good when they aren't stale, the baristas always make a consistent latte but they fail at the cappuccinos.

Came here for brunch with my mother on a beautiful saturday morning. We were in the area so we figured waffles n coffee would be a great idea. We were immediately sat but it took nearly ten minutes for a server to take our drink and food order; it wasn't even that busy. Now I understand that when a server gets busy she might take a little longer. But when the server is cracking jokes with the hostess while I am waiting for my order to be taken I find that to be unacceptable. Anyhow, as far as the food? It was actually really really good. I ordered coffee, Belgian Waffles, and a side of chicken sausages. Mamadukes ordered the BLT with coffee as well. Everything was well portioned, very appetizing, and very fullfilling. The server finally came to her senses and finished the job right. I will definitely return but hopefully the service will improve this time.

Food is meh. Customer service is terrible. Popped in early one morning to have breakfast with my dogs and baby in tow and we were informed that dogs are no longer allowed in the outdoor seating area. No biggie, we decided to get some food to go and camp out on a park bench somewhere. So I decided on the chili burrito for my hubs and asked for corn salsa to be added, but also declined the home fries side that comes with since we'd be eating on the fly. They decided to charge me $2 extra for the corn salsa even though we were skipping the home fries, this is even after the manager was asked if we could swap. So all in all the burrito ended up costing $12. So we get our food, find a place to camp out and low and behold the "burrito" is the tiniest thing I've ever seen (they should call it a rolled taco), the flavor was incredibly bland, and THERE WAS NO CORN SALSA. I had to laugh because it was just ridiculous. I was also super annoyed because the guy checked the order before giving it to me, he opened the box, picked up the burrito and looked at it (they come cut in half), so he KNEW it was missing before sending it out the door. Additionally, their iced coffee is bad, it tasted super watered-down. My husband and I have been a few times before and always feel very underwhelmed by the food so after this visit we've decided to give up on this place and won't be returning - ever. Side note - even though they are a coffee shop with low-cost coffee items they have a $10 minimum for using a debit or credit card. I saw someone come in and out while I was waiting for my food because of this, 2 disappointed customers in a matter of minutes! nice work beechwood!

Been going here for years. Reminds me of my old neighborhood in Brooklyn, which I left due to the heavy stroller invasion. Still and all, Beechwood tries hard to please, and they always do. It's an especially good option for brunch and lunch. They've updated & expanded their offerings, so now it's a page-by-page menu, rather than a laminated sheet. Doesn't matter. As long as they keep my menu choices, which are always the same, I'm fine with any format. Now if only there were a way to avoid the massive SUV strollers.

This place is fantastic. It has great food for every meal and is extremely reasonably priced. Even better, it's BYOB which means you can have a nice dinner with a nice bottle of wine for $30 or less. My first lunch spot was closed for vacation and I was craving a BLT. YELP to the rescue once again and I headed over to Beechwood. A quick description is a small cafe or coffee shop. Like a Starbucks before Starbucks became Starbucks if that makes sense. Yes they have WiFi, snacks, flavored coffees, sweets, plenty of seating and sandwiches to order. Taking a star away because of price, $8 BLT is a bit much but this is a nice solid lunch or brunch spot.

Went for a late breakfast with a new buddy, who recommended Beechwood. We were seated immediately by a smiling hostess, so points for that! Pretty impressive menu, though I'm personally not a fan of compote-topped pancakes, and instead much prefer pancakes with the stuff inside. There were numerous semi-unique or at least non-standard menu options. My friend went for a rather massive bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on challah bread, generously offering me a bite. Quite good sammy, and I like how the bacon was embedded in the eggs. I had a platter of biscuits and gravy, with two over light eggs that ended up being at least over medium. They had yucky dry edges, just like when I try making fried eggs at home! Not a good thing! I of course got toast, for egg dunking purposes, and was surprised they had so few bread options (wheat and sourdough). I went for sourdough, and it was good. The biscuits were nice and fluffy, and the gravy was pretty good overall, though with only minimal signs of meat. As usual, I should have known I wouldn't end up with a top-notch gravy, being so far north. I was pleasantly surprised by the coffee, as my friend said she's not a fan of it. Not great, but well above average in my book. Service was quite uneven. Early on it was very attentive and good, but as the meal advanced it declined precipitously. Luckily, the company was good, so it didn't annoy me. Still, we actually had to ask for the check after a long delay, and that's not something a patron should have to do. Too bad I don't live in the area, as I'd love to explore their menu further!

I've been to Beechwood Cafe & Market a few times now. The first two was only for coffee and desserts. This past weekend I finally had a chance to eat. The space: It's lovely. If you know me, it's completely my style! Distressed wooden mismatched chairs and tables, really nice country style wallpaper, and a splash of modern with Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych painting. I like how the coffee shop is separated from the restaurant. Dessert & Coffee: I've tried a very rich chocolate mouse cake dessert here - only for true chocolate lovers. I liked it, but it's kind of intense. The chocolate chai latte was delicious and the serving sizes are huge. Their baristas are pretty talented with latte foam art. Grub: This past weekend I went here for brunch. I really enjoyed the Korean steak sandwich with the sweet chilli sauce. I had it on the wheat bread with just a smidgen of basil mayo. I asked for it on the side and barely used in my attempt to be healthy, but it definitely went well with the sandwich. Kettle cooked potato chips on the side (yeah, yeah. not so healthy!) The meal was great. Service: Decent. Sometimes it's hard to catch their attention. I experienced that each time I went there, but it's nothing to complain about. Bonus: Their market sells these loooooooovely smelling candles and dishware that I really dig. I'll definitely be back here. Also, free wireless for gettin' work did.

One star for good coffee. That's it... because this place serves RAW CHICKEN. I used to love coming here. So when my family suggested we go out for brunch, Beechwood was my first suggestion. It's not all the time that my family can all get together for brunch. The one time we can, and they ruined it for us. When they brought out my Louisana Platter and I cut into the chicken, all I saw was raw meat. My sister, who ordered the same thing, thought her chicken was cooked. But eventually realized it wasn't. Our original waitress did not even come over to apologize. Actually, it seemed like she was avoiding us. Another waiter had to come over to speak to us. Granted, they only charged us for one of the plates. However, they can't pay us back for the time we wasted waiting for food we hoped would be great. Big disappointment.

Surprised to see this place only has 3 stars. I found this place after realizing all other local brunch spots stopped serving at 2pm but they serve til 4. We Walked in and the place was pretty busy. Ehhhh... both times I have been here have not been great. I got a chai latte the first time and it was lukewarm, tasteless and more than half of it was just foam. I also got a croissant which was closer to a butter roll in consistency and taste. The second time, I did not get anything, but the boyfriend got some coffee and was equally disappointed in the end result. For whatever reason, the place seems to be popular. The tables are always full when I pass by every Sunday morning. Maybe they're seeing something that I'm not, but I digress. I probably will not be returning after these past few mediocre encounters.

We had a great and fast meal there yesterday around 1:30 p, and I want to thank the hostess who dealt with our craziness. We had 30 minutes to eat lunch, get food for a bride and groom, and get back to leave for the church by 2:00. At first we thought we'd take it all to go and then asked how quickly we could get served. After some back-and-forth, we decided to stay. Am sure the waitstaff thought we were nuts. We were all hungry and a bit in panic mode. So the hostess sets us up at a table in the take-out/cafe area, she took our order and she got us our food quickly. The smoothies our kids had were fresh and delicious. They both snarfed their chicken caesar wraps. My wife and I each went with their Beechwood salad, which was also fresh, delicious, filling and easy to eat. We were in and out in like 25 minutes, and we had food for bride and groom along with our check, which was dropped by the hostess in the nicest way possible. Even one of the other waitresses checked in on us, which was appreciated. My only regret was that we only had 25 minutes because I wanted to stay longer. Next time we're in JC, we are going back for another meal so we can enjoy Beechwood properly. Kudos to our hostess (wish I knew your name). Thank you for helping us have a great experience! As brief as it was. :)

Despite the low ratings, I'm a fan of Beechwood Cafe. I can't speak of the whole menu, but there are 2 dishes I look forward to ordering if I plan on eating here. 1. The veggie "steak" sandwich. It's basically a marinated portobello mushroom served with the usual burger fixin's (lettuce, tomato, and cheese) along with basil mayo on an onion focaccia roll. SO good. I really like the flavors in this sandwich. It's a pretty decent portion too, so I usually take the other half home for lunch the next day. 2. The tuna salad wrap. There's really nothing special about it, but I really like the way it tastes. It's not drenched in mayo like other tuna salads I've tasted, so that's a major plus in my book. The only disappointing thing about this is it's only offered during lunch. When I asked if they offered it during dinner, they told me they didn't have it. When I asked if they had they salad with just the tuna on top, they said they did. I didn't understand why they just couldn't make me the wrap if they had all the ingredients, but it's okay. Their entrees come with a choice of a side, but I always pick their mixed greens with balsamic vinaigrette. I don't know what brand of dressing they use but it's amazing. It's tart and sweet, and is a perfect balance to my meal. The only complaint I have is their service is pretty slow. It might be because they don't want to bother you during your meal, but they should at least check up on you. The last time I ate here, I came with a friend to catch up, and we put 1 1/2 hours in our meter. We had just finished our meal before I realized my meter was up, and I ended up getting a ticket. I'm not here to complain about my ticket, but it's gives you a pretty good idea of how long it takes to get in and out of there. I like the food, which is why I don't mind the price tag too much, but I can see how it is expensive. My boyfriend and I each get sandwiches, and we end up paying about $25 (including tip) for our meal when we eat here. Not too bad, but not ideal for some sandwiches.

We were looking for a local place that was not Starbucks. This place was very cute, cozy and homey. We had a choice of community seating or a table. We were on the border of breakfast and lunch and they served breakfast until 4. They had a full menu service everything from challah french toast, pancakes, omelettes, and burritos. For the omelettes and burritos you could have built your own. I chose that and asked for goat cheese and roasted red peppers, among other things. I did not get either - but still it was a good burrito, so there was no need to complain. Overall the place was a sweet place to have a nice cup of coffee, people watch and enjoy a good breakfast. Lunch looked like it was good too.

Beechwood is a go-to brunch spot in Jersey City. Every time I've been, the service has been attentive and the food is great. I always refer friends to this great cafe! The only downside I find are the prices..I usually go there with friends or my guy and we split the bill so maybe that is why I haven't noticed..however the last time I was here, I was by myself and ordered the greek yogurt/granola with fruit and a cappuccino. I was shocked to see that my bill was $16..I think that's a little crazy for 1 person having an appetizer and a cappuccino. I haven't been back since but probably will come fall with my girlfriends.

It was like chewing wet newspaper . If it was totally gluten free and vegan maybe that can be an excuse for dryness but no . Even if you go to fancy brunch place in manhattan , it's not over priced like this . and for this crappy food ? I wonder how they can keep up with their business . The food is a bit over priced for what it is, but any of the sandwiches on Challah are very solid. The omlette is jusy meh. We decided to have brunch with the kids at Beechwood. My wife and I have good memories of hanging out there before the kids, but it just doesn't have that feel of a neighborhood coffee shop, OUR neighborhood coffee shop, anymore. The experience was unpleasant to say the least. We were seated at the entrance to the kitchen by woman, who seemed like she ran the establishment. When we requested to be seated at the other end of the restaurant, the corner of Grove and Mercer, we were told that that was not possible because the corridor was too narrow. We pointed to the corner which was empty and out of the way, she barked back. We were eventually seated there, but the experience left a bad taste in our mouth, and so did the "cappuccino", which was really a latte. The hot chocolate for kids came in two large coffee mugs, which were definitely not kid friendly, kind of the theme of our experience. The croissants were reasonably good. I don't expect that we will be going back there anytime soon.

Walking down Grove St. in the heavy rain, I decided to stop in to Beechwood for a nice cup of coffee and a bite. I walked in and saw a few people sitting down towards the right on their comps (think starbucks) and towards the left there was another customer sitting and enjoying a coffee. No one said anything to me when I walked in (such as "would you like a table", "for here or to go?" or anything of the like. This point will be important later in the review.) I went over to the counter and picked up one of the menus- it looked like they had a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch. I ordered a coffee and a cup of chili and also took a piece of the pumpkin flax bread off the shelf. Then I went to sit at a table. The left side of the cafe had several vacant tables, minus an employee eating at one of them. So the cashier calls me over to get my coffee. I'm sitting there enjoying my pumpkin bread and coffee (both were good) and the cashier comes over to me and tells me that this is dine-in only and that if customers come I am to go sit on the tiny chairs against the window. Did I not just order food? Am I not a paying customer? Are you kicking me out before I even got the food I ordered? Confused by the comment, I told her if anyone were to come into the {empty} restaurant, I would surely move over to the little chairs for those not wishing to be waited on. Several minutes later, my chili is ready and the cashier is putting it in a paper bag. Confused that she was wrapping up my food when I thought I made it pretty obvious that I was eating there, I told her it was okay, to not bother wrapping it up. She said that she was confused because I ordered at the to-go counter and that they should probably put a sign that says "to-go". Yes cashier, signage is important in a restaurant, but when your restaurant is empty and one of the few customers would like to sit, it shouldn't be such a hassle. It also doesn't help that you purposely reiterate in my earshot to the next customer whether or not they are to-go or dine in and that tables are only for dine-in, making me further uncomfortable. It's a shame because the food and coffee that I tried were all very good, but the cashier's attitude left a bad taste in my mouth.

Came here with my infant daughter a few days ago to meet her father for an early lunch. The side door with the ramp is not longer usable making it impossible to get a stroller or wheelchair inside. I was seated with menus however, not approached with a hello or a drink order for about 15 minutes. The waitstaff was unresponsive, unhelpful, and lazy. The one single waiter seemed more interested in flirting with certain tables than actually helping us out. I don't normally like to blast people out on Yelp however, this was a very frustrating experience. Don't even get me started with the walkie talkie that kept making horrible noises. I'm not sure if they have new owners since the entire place is different. I do enjoy the new seating arrangement and the establishment seems much cleaner. I use to come all the time when I lived around the corner and I was very happy then.

The worst of the worst, I called this place to make a pick up food for breakfast time. I ordered a pancakes and omelets, this person to answered the phone didn't know about the menu. I sent someone for our meal as soon I saw the bags I knew that was all wrong the order. I call them back about my food this girl gave me so many excuses oh "I am sorry I've been so busy with 5 tables and I think I sent you your Omelets she said! yes they sent me 2 fried eggs insted of my omelets and my pancakes never were packed and the worst part is that she hang me up the phone. Beechwood could be a great alternative to Starbucks, a homegrown cafe in your backyard. But, alas the indifferent service won't let that happen. On three occasions, I've stopped here for a quick lunch, nothing fancy, a soup & salad, coffee with friends and also desert -- cupcakes. The food was fine, nothing special. And the service on all three occasions was just lukewarm. A little attention to detail will go a long way in making customers feel special and bring them back.

The only reason this place does not get just one start from me is because it is a BYO and BYOs make everything better. Other than that, there is really nothing great about this place. The food is meh at best. My friend ordered the Huevos Rancheros. The chips were stale and the ingredients actually tasted canned. I ordered the Santa Fe Breakfast Burrito, which was alright. Once again, nothing tasted fresh, the tortilla wasn't even warmed and was very low quality (VERY gummy, starched). The third person got the eggs benedict. This was the best dish out of the three, but still mediocre. It is a dollar cheaper at Skinner's Loft and WAY WAY better. I am now crossing my fingers that people will stop giving them business so something much better can move in (that is still BYO!).

This is a cute lil spot of Grove Street right in the center of my JC hood. When you walk in it has a cute little shop to check out on your way in or out. I had the steak and eggs - which was pretty damn good. The server was nice and did a decent job- but had a deer in headlights look most of the time. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was a newbie. But all the servers did a good job to make sure that I always had a full cup of coffee. But for how cute this place is I feel like the menu and vibe could be soooo much more- hence only 3 stars. But it was good enough to check out again.

I came here with my cousin and her bridal party before our fitting. We had to wait a bit before seating but not too long. We were a big party like 11 people. When we were seated the waitress, very friendly by the way, took our order for drinks I got an apple juice. The drinks come in mason jars. I loved that idea! The place was pretty packed not to mention there's not much room in there. So if you're planing on eating here just remember it's very crowded if the place is busy. Our group sat in the middle of the restaurant on the left side when you come in and when you sit in the middle you might have to sit next to a party you do not know and basically share a table. Thankfully when we got there the party near us was leaving and that didn't happen to us. Anyway, we ordered our food I ordered the chicken and waffle. The waitress was prompt and our food came right away! My chicken and waffle was great! It was my first time trying that combo of foods. The chicken is fried in a light crispy batter. It was very moist as well! And the waffles were to die for! It was like they melted in my mouth! The plate came with a spicy mayonnaise and their homemade buttery syrup. I preferred the maple syrup, however. The spicy mayo sauce the exquisite! This plate I believe was $11 which is a bit expensive for the amount of food you get, half a waffle and two pieces of fried chicken. The portion for my plate wasn't a lot but it was very yummy. I also tried my moms chicken wrap which was amazing. Overall I had a nice experience. I enjoyed the way the place was decorated and the vibe. Also, parking was difficult. You might have to park a few blocks or away. We got lucky after a while and were able to park one of the cars in front of the place!

What's up with this place? I came twice and each time, I was treated like I was invisible. And it seems to be a recurring problem here with other patrons too. I came to sit in with a girlfriend of mine for lunch and there were only 4 other tables in Beechwood and 3 servers crowding around a corner. So "being busy" was not an excuse. I ordered the ham and cheese croissant and some scones on the side and 15 minutes later, lo and behold! Our server, Ms. Stick Up Her Ass, comes out and says they're out of croissants. So I ordered the BLT instead. Ms. Stick Up Her Ass eventually comes out 10 minutes later asking if I wanted whole wheat or sour-dough for my sandwich. So eventually, I got my soggy BLT with Lays potato chips dumped next to it and my friend got her breakfast burrito. Remember those scones I ordered? Yeah, I never got them. $40 lunch. Bad cappuccino and incompetent service. As I was walking out, right past our jerk of a server, I expected at least a "bye" or "thanks for coming" or at least some eye contact because I just tipped her ass but nothing. I saw her for like 3 minutes during lunch and she got almost a $10 tip. Well, that was a mistake. I should have gone to Marco & Pepe across the street. Maybe they'll have people competent enough to make something as easy as a BLT. What a joke.

I really want to like this place, I like the location, and the relaxing atmosphere which is perfect for you to go by yourself, have a meal and read the paper, or pull out your laptop and do some work. The place is just so quaint and it would be perfect for brunch or dessert and coffee IF ONLY... Their service is a little disorganized, it's just not consistent. Sometimes they are attentive, and sometimes you are overlooked. The last time I was there, my server didn't know the menu that well, forgot things that I had ordered and I had to chase her for my check. I had an okay salad (Beechwood) and French Onion was a little too salty for me (but I realize that many people like things salty so I would say that it wasn't bad). The thing that was truly disappointing to me was my dessert. I ordered the Tiramisu (because they were out of the cake, muffin or cookie I wanted, can't remember which) so I ordered it since they had it...and it was frozen. I understand that they get them from somewhere else, but frozen? I didn't want ice cream! Booo. I really like the atmosphere there, The food is just ok, and the prices aren't bad but I not that impressed with anything about this place enough to recommend it...and that makes me sad. I also am ever hopeful of their baked goods, but honestly, I make better cookies, cupcake and muffins in my own home, so I just don't see the point of spending my hard earned dollars on that. I am lukewarm about this place. I will probably go back, I just don't know when.

Went on rainy Sunday, 1:30pm, for a family branch - 3 adults, 3 kids (2.5, 4, 10y old). Were lucky to get a round table and a high chair, as it was a little bit packed this hour. At 2:30 there was much more space. Had Burger, Beechwood chicken wrap, chicken and pancakes plate for kids, Chelsea omelet, berry pancakes. The food was good, no complaints from us. The menu states 18% gratitude for parties of 6 or more, but we were not charged (thanks!), I guess because 3 of us were kids. I wish they have more options for kids and some entertainment for them (crayons etc). All in all a nice casual branch.

This place may be having an off day:-/ I'm going to give this cafe the benefit of the doubt. It's a beautiful August afternoon, there are only 2 other people here, and the wait staff outnumber the patrons. As a noob to this place I placed an order at the counter for a latte and a slice of pie. I told the server to put it on a plate--that would have been the right time for him to tell me that I can just sit at a table and order from there. Instead he have it to me and let me go sit down. When I asked for a fork the waitress politely told me the dining room was for table service. Not a problem really, but information I could've used 20 min ago. There's no one here!!!! I wasn't even sure it was open let alone running two different ordering regimes. On to the treats: Iced chai--- it was ok. 3.5/5 if I'm being nice nothing special. Nothing awful. Key lime pie: the grossest piece of baked good I've ever had on a plate. It was some kind of unbanked gooey goo with a clearing green slimy lime coating on top. It was refrigerated, yet it was warm. Thank god there was a hair on it because I took it back. Kind of grossed out. Not by the hair--that happens. The pie ewwww. Uugggggh. Gross!!! I am generous with the rating because I think this place is probably capable of much better. Is in a great location and looks like on certain days and at certain times it could be amazing. But not this particular time. I'll try again soon. I will never again order he key lime pie.

I literally live around the corner from Beechwood, and when I first moved in I was excited that there was such a cute, sunny, neighborhood cafe right down the street. I've been there a bunch, but despite it's proximity, I don't go often. The food is fine, but overpriced. There is nothing special about it, and things seem bland and generic. I've ordered a couple of the mexican inspired breakfast/lunch dishes, and the guac is obviously not made from scratch and the same can be said about the salsa. It has that obvious taste of something that has been laced with some sort of preservative. The waffles and things like that are fine, passable, but again, for the price (not expensive, but not cheap) I would expect something a little better than generic and nondescript. It's not that I won't go back/don't go back, it's just that I'd rather go someplace else. The coffee counter is a little slow on service as well.

This quaint little coffee shop offers up great coffee...of course...and a number of tempting baked goods. My guilt usually gets the best of me before I order a sweet though so I cannot attest to whether they are as tasty as they look. This place serves some great breakfast classics like waffles, eggs benny, and a phenomenal sausage egg & cheese sando. They also offer some burritos that are quite tasty and satisfying. For the health nuts they have fruit plates and granola if you want to get crunchy. What surprised me most about Beechwood is that they serve some great comfort food too. Chicken Pot Pie, pasta dishes, and my favorite...meatloaf sandwich. The lunch/dinner menu may even be better than breakfast! The price is certainly reasonable which is good since the service is suspect at times. Usually friendly, but not always prompt. A great place to unwind with a book, grab some breakfast, or warm the stomach with some classic comfort dishes. Sidewalk seating when the weather permits.

My friend's omelette was overcooked, yet the cheese inside wasn't melted. I also would have appreciated more options on the menu. What really brought the restaurant down was the service. While our waitress was nice, it took a very long time for her to get our order and for the food to come out. While this would have been perfectly understandable had the restaurant been busy, this was not the case-it was not crowded at all.

Beechwood is awesome! My girlfriend have been living around the corner for almost 4 months and we just went to dinner here for the first time last night. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating as well as a cafe counter to order frozen yogurt ($1 cone special all summer) and the various arrays of coffee, tea, and desserts, which are all homemade (I think). We ended up sitting inside (FYI they have free WIFI and it's BYOB). The dining room is charming and has a Charleston feel to it. The menu is extensive with anything from soups, salads, and hummus, to sandwiches, and entrees. I had the shrimp arrabiata over linguini and the gf had the turkey club. The pasta dish was amazing. From my experience pasta dishes always lack something, (gummy pasta, over sauced, etc.) but Beechwood got it right! Really nice al dente pasta, well cooked shrimp, and a really tasty sauce. It was a great portion and my girlfriend was even able to have some. GF's sandwich had nice thick cut turkey breast and I like how the sandwiches are served with either pasta or green salad instead of fries. The waitress was attentive, but I feel like maybe she was having a bad day and it was showing through. All in all, a great experience that deserves 5 stars.

Beechwood's got it all: it's cheap, has delicious food that's not terrible for you, can be very quick if you need a fast bite, has outdoor seating, and is BYOB. It's a winner! They recently just redid their interior to include a large family-style seating are in the middle of the place. It seems like a good way to get more seating in a small space, but I was only there when the place wasn't very crowded. I can imagine that type of seating might get uncomfortable with too many people. That being said, the food is really good (the veggie Korean steak sandwich is great, and I loved their Beechwood salad). I'm docking one star for the fact that it's a bit crowded, and also that they never seem to have the one dessert I LOVE that's on their menu: the cookies n cream mousse. Their other desserts are delicious, but it's not the same! Overall, a really nice place to go for a fairly quick bite that won't cost you a fortune: and if you get a bottle of wine and sit outside on a beautiful day, it's also a great place to spend leisurely time hanging out with friends. See, we really CAN have it all!

Beechwood is my go-to neighborhood coffee/cafe and work/study spot. I tend to visit every week and always manage to have a good experience. Firstly, the coffee is strong and dark and the servers are religious about keeping your cup full (even if you stay six hours). This is 5 star quality to me. Where else does this happen? They've recently done a bit of a re-vamp with a big communal table down the center. While it is super trendy, I'm not sure how practical it is for them during their busy brunches. I do like the additional seating they've put in the market section. The new orange cushions along the bench seating are a bit of eyesore but they're bright and cheery so I will forgive them. The front windows are huge and the natural light is always welcome. I'm guilty of sticking to my basic favorites on the menu - the veggie wrap, the breakfast burrito and egg sandwich (on sourdough). All consistently good quality, fresh and reasonably priced. I'm mostly a weekday, daytime visiter but they also do a BYOB dinner service and they light the place up with candles so it's quite lovely and intimate. I have been in for dessert a couple of times. The desserts are all made in-house or by a local baker who lives across the street. The cheesecake cupcakes are gorgeous - quite a few flavors, delicious biscuit base. The chocolate lava cake is lethal. The carrot cake is moist and fresh and most importantly, they don't skimp on the cut or the frosting. I've ventured in once for a weekend brunch. They do a decent job of dealing with the craziness. The sidewalk seating is perfect for Spring. The service is always decent, often a little laid back but that doesn't worry me. A few of the old faces I've always seen are now gone but the new ones are nice. At this sort of place I'm not looking for top notch, I'm looking to do my work and snack and sip coffee. It's nice to be able to sit for a number of hours without the staff pushing the check at you because some other hipster wants your table. The music seems to be kind of staff pick. Beatles, Regina Spektor, The XX, Classical... It's mellow, not-too-loud. It always seems to work for me. I do feel like Beechwood has copped a little bit of unnecessary bad press. The space is beautiful and sunny. The service is good. The coffee is ace. These are the most important variables, right?

Beechwood is definitely growing on me. I used to really dislike the place, primarily b/c of the service, but they've gotten better. I usually go for bfast on the weekend with the spouse. My husband began eating here more often because he tried more options and they tasted pretty good. He took me here today for lunch. It was busy, but not packed. The waitress was pretty attentive. My husband ordered the Korean Steak Sandwich, and the chili. He said they were so juicy and amazing. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich which is meatloaf, marinara, on a roll. I asked for cheese and mushrooms to be added. The waitress said they," had mushrooms, but would ask if the cook would put them on the sandwich". Um OK. If you have the item why would that be a problem? Anyway she comes back with our food, and as she sits my plate down she said that,"the cook didn't WANT to add mushrooms to the sandwich". EXCUSE ME!! Since when does a cook decide what will and will not go on a sandwich, especially if he has the ingredient, and the customer(you know the one that PAYS, and keeps the cafe in business) has asked for it. Don't worry, you wont have the chance to make another "decision" about my meal because I wont be coming back.

I love the coffee/espresso drinks here and finally decided to have breakfast here. The menu has a huge selection for meat and vegi diets. My overall food experience was delicious and I leave buzzed on my caffeine high. However, two times now, my husband and I's food came out at different times (nothing worse than cold eggs) so one must start eating before the other. Plus, the fried potatoes that come out with some of the egg dishes, I have not once tasted them be more than warm at best (which makes me ? Food safety). I really like the atmosphere of this place, but unfortunately there are just other places were I can get a hot meal. So the extra star stays on the the cafe side.

Cute cafe. Plenty of seats and free wifi (didn't actually use it so not sure about quality of connection). We came since kraverie was closed on Easter day (boooo). They were definitely open, almost all tables were filled. Got the chocolate lava cake - it was moist and wished they have vanilla ice cream to go with it. Avoid the tiramisu at all cause. Not sure how they call that tiramisu, it was a mix of caramel and whipped cream. Carrot cake - huge, but a bit too dry in my opinion. I'll come back again for the ambiance and not expect so much from their food.

Not sure if this place changed ownership or what, but the quality of the food and service has really gone downhill. The place also underwent a bit of a facelift, so i think it actually looks much nicer inside. But the food and service issues are definitely a problem. I ordered food today to be picked up - a chicken club, which i had used to order there pretty frequently. When I got there, the girl behind the counter told me that she "accidentally gave my order away to someone else, and they'd need to make another one and I'd have to wait". I though maybe she'd throw me a bone... money off the order? A free cookie? My drink for free? Nope... nothing but a weak apology. (Side note, while i was waiting, i heard her tell a server that she accidentally put in someone's order wrong, and they'd have to re-make it. I mean, seriously?) Finally, what used to be a great sandwich today was meh. It was on a bad baguette (used to be on sourdough bread) and was just plain and boring. Tomatoes that are green in the middle and taste like cardboard. No mayo. Nothing special about it. What a shame, i used to love this place. Hopefully they get their act back together. It's not surprising it was completely empty at 1pm on a week day.

we have come here 3 times in the past 2-3 weeks - we tried to order to order this one meal- on a croissant every time we come around brunch - they are alway out of the croissant - which I just don't get for place that has "bakery" in it's name - literally 3 times out of it.. the service seems to b getting slower and slower - the food is ok - nothing to write home about - so I had this as a draft for about 2 weeks - and we r here again 11am and surprise they r out of croissants

I went here on Sunday 11-29-14 around 2pm with my fiancé. We came all the way from Brooklyn, NY just to dine here. We were seated right away by an Asian waiter and he also brought us water. To make a long story short we will not be coming back here to eat. Two Caucasian women came a few minutes after us and sat next to us and stared at us the whole 10 minutes we were there, instead of looking at their menus. Their waitress, a tall, thick, Caucasian lady came straight to them (even though we were first) greeted them, and took their drink orders before us. And she also was staring at us while she was giving the ladies the "special treatment".They even received straws in their waters without even having to ask. Still no one came to my table for our drink orders, or even gave us the same treatment as the two ladies next to us. Their waitress obviously did that to us on purpose and I'm pretty sure she was supposed to be our waitress too. I hope she gets reprimanded for this. It really didn't take much evidence to see that this is a racist environment. Not to mention my fiancé is Puerto Rican and I'm half black, half Irish. So we left with dignity and took proper protocol. I rated this restaurant one star only because YELP required a rating. It's sad that racism still exists and whoever the owner is, I hope he/she reads this and responds like they did on the other reviews below. They need to get rid of that waitress and anyone else in there with hate in their hearts towards the customers. I hope he/she is not racist. I have reported this to the appropriate higher-ups of New Jersey state, which by the way I'm blood related to, and I have video to prove that racism exists at The Beechwood Cafe in New Jersey.

no focaccia for you!! i remember when this place first opened (9 years ago?) and i lived just down the block and got all giddy for their almond croissants on the weekends.. so i was in the neighborhood recently and had some money burning a hole in my pocket so decided to grab a coffee and an almond croissant.. coffee was good, croissant really, really f'ing good.. so why 3 stars? the issue i had was with customer service.. my partner wanted the focaccia bread.. plain.. and they said no.. only at certain times can you get the bread and it has to be a sandwich, blahblahblah.. seriously? you can't just sell someone a piece of bread? so he ordered the corn muffin and it was pretty bad.. i had to taste it myself and wish i hadn't..

How does this place not get better reviews?? For what it is, it definitely deserves 5 stars. It's the most affordable place in the area $10 for a huge bowl of delicious penne vodka? Amazing. It's BYO making it another great value. Brunch here in the summer is awesome, sitting outside in the sun having a delicious breakfast burrito with some of the best guac in the area makes this one of my fav places to brunch in summer. In winter, it's cozy and inviting inside with lounge seats and jazz. And there is never a long wait making this my go-to spot if I don't feel like dealing with waiting 1 hr + for brunch in the city!!

I've had the turkey burger (which is amazing; get the pasta salad for a side) and the chicken sandwich with bbq sauce and bacon is always great. The pesto penne for dinner is a good choice. However, I am not crazy about their brunch. It;s very sub par and definitely could be better. So if you are going to check this place out, do go for lunch and dinner! BYOB- def a plus.

The food is just not that great. Brunch is greasy, no comparison to Marco and pepe across the street. Yea they have a wide selection and if you go simple oatmeal,it's okay but overpriced for simple staples. Good economical way to do boozy brunch since they are byob and their orange juice is good.

I live right around the corner from this place and I really, really want to like it. I will say the coffee is great, I even buy beans there and take home. It's pricey though, upwards of $15 lb for flavored. Non flavored beans are also very good and $10 a pound. I dont understand why the flavored is more expensive by so much... anywho the major issue at this place is service. it is the worst. The food is good and the decor is lovely. The service is beyond awful. I've waited forever for a check when the place was dead before - and asked for it a few times. Today I went in for an egg sandwich and the waitress told me there was nothing except challah bread, which is sweet and not healthy. I liked this place because I thought there were healthier options. Then a few tables were filled and some people sat down next to us; all were served bread other than challah with their meal: rye, wheat, a bagel. I asked the waitress because these people ordered after I sat down and she said that was challah. I grew up in a jewish home - I know challah bread and it looks nothing like a wheat toast or a bagel. I said that it wasnt and rather than saying she was mistaken or would check if something came in she insisted. I again waited ages for my check and the refill of coffee that I had to request ages before. I took my business elsewhere. part of the problem with the staff may be that they seem to have trouble with english. There's also a guy who has been behind the counter from time to time for ages and I assume he's an owner. He is very rude. When you go to a neighborhood place all the time and you want to support them, rather than a major chain (and there is a starbucks and dunkin donuts down the street) it would be nice if the people there could just be average. the last time I went in to get an egg sandwich to go I was told they didnt do that anymore. It seems like they are trying to be more like Marcos across the street, but they were better when they were doing their own thing. also note: the omelets are a la carte, they dont come with potatoes. this place is not any more reasonable than marcos, where the staff is lovely. Unfortunately the food does not come close to making up for the poor service. A corner cafe should offer customers a warm and inviting place to sip coffee, grab a bite, and relax. The coffee here is nothing you can't find in a bodega, and the food is just average. The staff should really make it a point to treat customers with more attention, and then maybe it would be worth stopping by.

I used to come here by default when Marco & Pepe had long waits but this place has grown on me & since then, become a go-to brunch spot. I looooooove the huevos rancheros, and the other Mexican-inspired breakfast burritos. A short hallway connects the dining area to the market side. The market not only has coffee & breakfast pastries to go but also carries an eclectic mix of home goods that are worth checking out. The dining area is large and has plenty of seating. There is outdoor seating as well when the weather is nice. And it's a BYO! ;)

I was just looking for a place to study here in Jersey City since I live nearby, but didn't want to make my way out to the city as that would take too much lost time that I could be spent on studying. Alas, I found myself here at Beechwood Cafe. Plus: The best part of this place is that the oldies music is hella on-point. They be playing some bomb Etta James, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin up in here. Not so slow that it'll make you sleepy and not complete your work, and upbeat enough to encourage your work ethic to be in sync. There's a to-go portion of the cafe especially for a lot of the cupcakes that they sell. Their WiFi is fast; you just have to ask the waiter/waitress to give you the password. The tea and coffee is really good and the service is really accommodating and friendly. The waiter would come by to us often to refill our water. They serve some good Korean and Japanese dishes. The food was decent. I had the dinner special Japanese Omelet that had mushrooms, teriyaki beef, rice, and mozzarella inside of it, which was aiite but not anything that I was going crazy over. I also had my friends' burger that was served on onion bread and it was so good (I almost wish I had ordered what she had ordered). I had the tiramisu for desert and it was a good thick mix of flavor. This place doesn't seem to get that much business on a Saturday night, which was good for me as I had no trouble getting work done here. Delta: The environment is one of the drawbacks. For instance, they only have one electric plug that is on the ceiling of the wall and is only near one of the tables. If there were other groups of people who wanted to study here, I am not sure how they would be able to access the plug since we have the table right under it. The sink in the bathroom is automatic and only had really cold water, which because it's cold outside, it had made my hands even more colder. The other drawback is that the place is really dim-lit. I would recommend sitting closer to the windows if you were here at night so that some of the street lights can supplement your capacity to see and study in here. I'm ambivalent if the prices are in accordance to what the quality of the food I ate though, They seem to be more on the pricier side. Overall, I like this place and I would come back. This was one of my favorite spots when I lived in downtown jersey city. I've done breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch here and have never been disappointed. Brunch can be a little overcrowded depending on when you go but the food and fast service makes up for it. Try the California Omelet! Staff are always beyond friendly too.

Went to this place for a Saturday brunch after living in Jersey City for 4 months and can't believe I didn't go earlier. It has a great atmosphere with some great tunes playing - Damien Rice, Nick Drake, The Shins, etc. The food was really good and if you're used to a decent brunch place in Manhattan than this is on par with that but right near Grove! The staff is also super friendly and although we had to ask twice for more coffee they were really apologetic when they realized they forgot. I really wish all places in J.C. were made like Beechwood.

Cute neighborhood brunch place in JC. Relaxing place where you can sit inside or outside and there's a little takeout shop right next door. The breakfast burrito was really tasty, especially the green sauce (salsa?) that the burrito sat in. They also have this very interesting dish that looks like a weird morphing of a nacho plate with breakfast food and eggs mixed among the nachos and served in a bowl. The person who ordered it got lots of abuse, but apparently it tasted fine. Read the other Yelp reviews and complaints about service and I chuckled... We had asked one of the waitresses to take a quick picture for us and she gave a rather snippy "I'm busy right now." Now it's not like we need an hour of your time or even 1 minute of your time. She took the picture for us anyway and it took no more than 15 seconds. Now that was some unnecessary attitude, but hey this is NYC area so get used to it. Bottom line: Very tasty brunch in a relaxing neighborhood corner location. And welcome to the NY/NJ area as you might get some attitude from the servers but don't let it get to you.

I stopped by on a Friday morning and the place was empty. But it would not surprise me that they do gangbusters on the weekend or at lunch. Weekdays I am guessing that everyone hits the PATH train for NYC and gets breakfast in the city. I was stopping by a local office and searching for anyplace other than Dunkin or Starbucks. I had coffee and a cheese croissant. Both very good. Based on first impressions, they have their game on.

I went to Beechwood for Sunday brunch around 2pm with my boyfriend for the first time in awhile. I ordered the beechwood salad which was perfect. The grilled chicken was tender and the dressing to lettuce ratio was great (the greens were not bathing in vinegarette.. woo!). My boyfriend ordered a breakfast burrito and a corn muffin which he seemed to enjoy very much. We both had just the right amount of food... not too much to hurt our bellies. My only complaint would be the unattentive staff. We were sitting for about 20 minutes before our waitress came over to take our orders. She was sweet and apologetic, but later when the crowds died down, we were waiting for our check for a very long time, while she gabbed with the other waitresses. Maybe they work a little different there and prefer to not rush their customers out of the door? Give your customers a tinsy bit more love please.

Cute, bustling breakfast spot in Jersey City. We've been here twice now and have had mixed experiences thus far, but I have lots of mediocre feelings about this place. No one greets you when you enter. The folks at the cash register do their best to ignore you and force you to nearly confront them to get a table. They're not THAT busy. Why the attitude? They have a limited breakfast menu - couple egg dishes, 3 or 4 burritos, an odd dish with tortilla chips/eggs/salsa that turns into a soupy mess in your bowl. They have a farmer's breakfast of eggs and bisquits/gravy - I am a big time bisquits and gravy fan, which I ordered on my 2nd trip here - and this was just not up to snuff. The bisquits didn't have enough gravy for them and it was cold when it arrived. Our waitress seemed either new (or inexperienced) or was a family member of the owners - but she never checked back with us to see how things were, to bring more coffee, etc. I had to ask one of the managers/owners for more gravy. I notice that he didn't say anything to her after my request so that sort of leads me to think that she might be family as any manager worth his salt would reprimand an employee for having to do his/her job for them. Ya know? On this second trip we ordered French Toast for the kids. It was actually some of the worst looking french toast I've ever seen. Inexcusable. My partner had a burrito, smothered in a chile verde sauce, it looked pretty good, but presentation was lacking again. On my first trip here I ordered their eggs benedict, which was pretty good, but I compare all restaurant's eggs benedict to my own, which are spectacular. I make the world's best hollandaise. Really, I do. What does this place have going for it? - Cuteness, as in the Shabby Chic variety - Bustling atmosphere - Outdoor sidewalk patio where you can people watch or bring your dog - BYOB at lunch/dinner is a nice feature (not sure if they charge for corkage tho) When it comes to food, this place borderlines on amateur. When it comes to service they fall flat on their face. I'm sure we'll be back as it's one of the only breakfast places in town that we've found so far, but we've tried the place on the opposite corner (Marco & Pepe) and have found that it's menu and quality of service is more to our liking. It has it's own outside sidewalk patio, but they actually serve alcohol (mimosa with that brunch, anyone?) and have a more "grown up" menu. Atmosphere only takes a restaurant so far - I think east coasters routinely forget this. ------------------------------ 7/18/2010 Another day, another visit. We had friends in town and my other half decided we should eat here. My choice was for the White Horse Tavern, but noooooo....he wanted to go to Beechwood. I think that perhaps the reviews here have finally sunk in to them a bit. We were seated rather quickly and a bus person brought out water almost immediately. Service was hugely improved today - but we did notice that the waitress was someone we'd not seen before. Maybe that explains the change? I ordered the breakfast burrito. It was filled with egg and loads of canned corn. Chips, sour cream, and guac on the side. It wasn't all that great. I won't be ordering that again. My other half ordered the same thing - he didn't complain, but how could he when it was he that decided to come back here. One of our other friends ordered the juevos rancheros. It was served in a bowl on top of tortilla chips, just like the "Chiles Quiles" are. It looked a bit disappointing to me. I dunno....I have to raise them from 2 stars to 3 just based on the improvement in service but that's all I can muster as I'm still not at all impressed by the food. N

This review is based on one experience having dessert and hot drinks only: After dinner out on Grove Street this past week, my husband and I decided to finally try Beechwood Cafe for dessert. After walking/driving past countless times, we were excited to finally sit in the cozy atmosphere and experience what we'd hoped would be wonderful desserts. My husband had the chocolate lava cake with a white hot chocolate and I had a lemon cupcake with a 'Southern Mint' tea. Drink review first: My husband was not please with his white hot chocolate. He found the drink wasn't quite hot enough and the taste was not quite up to par. My Southern Mint tea was an excellent tea bag selection - a really lovely blend of different mints. I drank it with nothing added and it saved the cafe experience for me (Hard to mess up a cup of hot tea if the tea itself is high quality and the water is hot). Dessert review next: I love cupcakes. I mean, I love cupcakes so much that we had cupcakes instead of wedding cake at our wedding. The cute looking lemon cupcake had me hoping for a good experience, but it was just average. The cake had a very nice taste, but was too dry. The icing was not described as being lemon cream cheese icing, so I was expecting lemon butter cream on top. I would've chosen something different had I know it was cream cheese based. Perhaps it was my fault for not asking. All of that being said, I could still recognize that the lemon cream cheese icing was good quality and nicely flavored. If you enjoy this type icing - and don't mind the dry cake - you might still want to try the lemon cupcake. On a bright note, I spoke to the waitress and the manager afterward and made the suggestion that they add this icing info. to the label or the menu description and my suggestion was well-received with open minds. I was even thanked for my feedback. That was nice. My husband's chocolate lava cake was also... average. His main complaint was that the cake part seemed a bit too dry. Seems to be a pattern. I tried a bite and found that the chocolate taste, while ok, could've been a bit richer. Table service was ok. Nothing to write home about... although they do get a bonus point for receiving constructive criticism with interest and grace. The counter staff (on the take-out side) seemed very friendly and eager to help. I would go back for a hot tea, but not for a blended drink or dessert. We may give this cafe one more try - as we are still interested to try their lunch food. If we go back, I'll update my review accordingly

Overall pretty bad. Got our food before our silverware arrived while sitting at an outside table in early september. Food was getting cold while we couldn't even try to eat it. Then one of us who ordered an omelet and toast, got the omelet also and no toast, but instead a question of 'whole wheat was out, how about sourdough'. All this while the omelet was being served. Ok fine. Then that toast took another 5 minutes. Then it came with no butter. Then we were told that toast doesn't come with butter,that butter was an additional charge. WTF. Luckily we didn't have to sign our credit card statement with our own blood, pens were included. Eggs Benedict for me were pretty mediocre at best. Yolks were overdone, not enough Hollandaise and it wasn't good enough. Taters were respectable. We will not return.

I had lunch at Beechwood ages ago and it was really quite awful. I don't remember exactly what I ordered other than that it was a pasta dish and tasted like it came straight out of the microwave. As a result, I didn't go back for years - until today. I just had lunch there with my sister. We were seated in the front "cafe" room as it was most convenient for us since we went with a baby in a stroller. I ordered the Bim Bim Bowl with a lemonade and my sister had one of their breakfast sandwiches, a side of fries and a lemonade. All of the food was really mediocre - even the fries. The worst part of the experience was that someone came out of the bathroom, which is located in the front room, and slowly but surely the room wreaked of air freshener and crap. We quickly paid our bill and left. Sadly, I don't see a reason to return.

The only place open on Labor Day on Grove for a decent meal Service - 5 out of 10 (the staff seemed a bit clueless) Food came out pretty fast- about 10 minutes Dog friendly, couples friendly I ordered: golden chamomile tea, salmon egg benedict. YUM!! The benedict came with a side of potato, onion and green peppers, very flavorful. The place was packed though, so plan to be there a little earlier than 12 on the weekends if you want good seating. UPDATE: I tried their take-out, I ordered the same hummus and pita I got here last time and the pita was ROCK HARD by the time I got home (10 mins between food ordering and eating). Suggestion: Don't forgot about the take-out folks please. We pay the same amount for the same food.

this is a cute brunch place in jersey city grove area. I'm just getting use to the neighborhood, and this is probably one of the cuter places. I ordered the breakfast burrito. I love how there was fresh corn, tomatoes and cilantro in addition to the normal egg in a tortilla. I also enjoyed the chips and guac too! My boyfriend ordered the corned beef hash. It looked kind of weird but still tasted good regardless. Sometimes the flavors weren't strong enough so had to add some hot sauce on the side. I would def. come here for brunch when I'm in Jersey City. The only thing is that I hoped the service would be a little quicker.

There was some sticker shock at how reasonable the prices were, for sure we were not in New York City. The food was delicious, specially the mussels. The portion was small, really appetizer sized but with the fresh and tasty side green salad, a perfect dinner sitting out on a warm summer night. I loved the balsamic dressing, not usually something I like. They offer the mussels for free if your BYOB, something that amused me. We didn't try the desserts but viewed them in the bakery cases and they looked amazing. Maybe next time. For sure there will be a next time, food was tasty, service good and prices reasonable.

We have given this place 3 chances to satisfy (let alone impress) us. After today there will not be a fourth. We arrived and were seated by a nice waiter. He gave us menus and we looked them over for 15 minutes at which point he realized we had the wrong menu and gave us another. Another 10 min goes by and we finally placed our order. We then waited another 25 minutes until our waiter asked me if I truly wanted my dish because the rice will take 10 more minutes. I said, "yes, no problem." We waited another 20 minutes. My husband's dishes arrived entree-first, then appetizer. I watched him eat and finish his food without my dish in sight. When my dish finally arrived, it looked quite good, but the rice was barely cooked! With very few other customers at 4:00pm, it took way too long to get our food and even loner to get our one simple appetizer. Though the staff is friendly, the owners should do a better job of training and running the ship.

The wrong place at the right time. Not sure how the owners got Beechwood wrong. Beechwood is basically two things at once - store and restuarant. The store is cute; it has nice items, albeit expensive but unique. The curator did a nice job and I always want to get something, but in the end what am I going to do with a vintage-looking cup with the letter "P" in an early 20th century font? The food in the front is miserable for the most part: bread is disgusting and the croissants are from BJ's or some wholesaler. The cookies are good. What went wrong with the resturant? The tables, chairs, setup, environment: all good. The bathroom: clean and designed to inspire. The outside seat: who can beat that? BYOB: I'm a fan. But the food - blah. Small menu seems to have been designed for fans - you know, a place that has been around for years and years and they simplified the menu as dictated by their fans. You can't pull that off when you're a relatively new restaurant. It's like that saying: you're not old school if you're in high school. Coffee snobs - this isn't your place. For dinner - forget it. For lunch - sure, why not. For breakfast or brunch - probably... maybe.

Visually appealing but sadly the food was tasteless and disappointing. We tried the croissant with California scrambled, which should of had a little salt and pepper or something! Corned beef hash was made with some kind of chorizo sausage which had no resemblance to your typical "corned beef hash" and also the sausage biscuits were the worst! Flavorless in the sauce and surprisingly in the sausage too! I dont know how it could be like this, but I really wanted to love this place.

Talk about bad service and prices! Came here for brunch and our waiter was idiotic. He never checked on us not once. Took our orders and never saw him again. Asked another server for the check since we couldn't find him and she never got us our check either. The place wasn't even busy!!! We had to go inside and ask for the bill ourselves. I joined Yelp just to review this place. I would have sent a private email, but I can't find a website for them. I went to brunch on 6/9/13 with a friend, and I have to say I was hugely disappointed. It was run as though no one had ever done a brunch service before. My friend told me that he had been to Beechwood Cafe before and preferred it over Marco and Pepe's. After today -- he said "not again!" We get there around 11 AM -- the place is cute and busy-ish, there were several tables open and we grabbed one outside. A waitress points to a table we should sit at and brings out menus. And then we don't see any service for 15 minutes. No coffee. No tea. Actually, a nice guy brought us water. Finally, we flag down another waitress (who was not the one who seated us) and she took our order. I have to say, the food came out quickly. In fact -- somehow it came out SO quickly, that it beat my coffee and my friend's tea. So, here we are with a lovely looking plate of food. And no coffee. I ordered the salmon eggs benedict, which was generically ok (biggest compliment for the place: They included a lot of salmon. But there was almost no hollandaisse.) My friend ordered an ommlette of some sort, and the cheese was solid; as if it were just taken out of the fridge. The inside was cold. We never got a refill on coffee or tea, no one ever asked how we were or how the food was, and finally -- 15 minutes after finishing our meals -- we had to grab someone to give us a bill. There seemed to be plenty of staff working, so I have no idea why no one seemed to take ownership of our table. We left a paltry $3 tip (I recommended $0, but my friend was feeling generous). Seriously amateur hour. Try Marco's across the street. It isn't perfect, but the food is spot on and the service actually exists.

I came here for brunch. It was pretty good! There were a lot of families so the ambiance was a little "loud/family-friendly" which is fine by me. I had the eggs/taco/beans mix - it was DELICIOUS. The service was pretty good and afterward we checked out the cute market that is attached. Not mind-blowing but not bad at all! Definitely a good brunch spot in Jersey City. Don't get me wrong, I like the casual atmosphere with touches of Jersey City hispterness, but its just becoming a disappointing brunch spot. If you do end up here, I'd stick with basics like the omelettes and mushroom hash. They are about average. Would not do the baked goods again, I've sort of been burned by a stale scone and a Croissant that was a little too "eggy" (Yes, so much eggwash that there was practically scrambled egg on it - not so appetizing) I think they fell way by the roadside with the Huevos Rancheros. I was rather intrigued on my previous couple of visits there by this dish that everyone seemed to be getting, but my experience ordering it for myself was quite different. It was essentially a bowl filled with stale tortilla chips, low-quality guacamole, water/soupy beans with some fried egg and mozzarella (yes, MOZZARELLA, the cheese which pairs best with Huevos Rancheros, right?). It all blends nicely into one wet disaster. This has to be one of the worst things I've ordered at any brunch ever. Congratulations, Beechwood Market!

Stumbled across Beechwood Cafe while in Jersey City for a meeting. Love the casual, homey ambiance and the communal table. I ate here for lunch and loved the veggie steak sandwich: portabello with melted cheese, red onion, tomato and pesto on a rosemary focaccia. It was outstanding. Service is relaxed but we did ask if we could be in and out in 45 minutes and we were. I will be back.

One of my favorite places for weekend Brunch when in the area. Cappuccino's are great and huge cups! Among my favorite dishes here: Lox Mashed mushroom Breakfast burrito and don't forget the dessert! It's generally busy at weekends so wait times can be between 30-45 minutes!

Beechwood has really improved since the last time I ate there a few months ago. I went for Sunday brunch and they revamped their entire menu and now have a lot of great options. I had the Tofu Benedict which was delicious- it was lightly fried tofu with poached eggs on top of bread and a fresh bell pepper blend mixed in with homefries. Really good a lot of interesting flavors! My friend had a Mexican style omelet which she really enjoyed. I would definitely go back for brunch!

Been here a few times experiencing mainly brunch. Whenever we get here its not normally too crowded yet so we get seated quick. Food is good (but wouldn't say outstanding) on each visit and they serve fast...however, on one occasion when I came with a friend she wasn't too excited about her meal (to which i cant remember what she ordered). I would come here for something fast and for a quick bite just to satisfy your hunger.

Beechwood has all the components to be a great local coffee/brunch place, but never quite lives up to its potential. While the restaurant is well decorated and has a good amount of outdoor seating, I have never had anything really delicious from their menu. As other reviewers have mentioned, they need to focus on their service. Once, I ordered yogurt and granola for breakfast. The first time - the waiter brought me just granola (who would order just granola). The second time -- the waiter brought me granola with *frozen* yogurt (think pinkberry style). Finally, I got my granola with regular yogurt.

Cute neighborhood cafe that has good lattes and tasty brunch selections. Had their breakfast burrito and it was delicious. Not like i'm an expert or anything but they just poured a bunch of salsa and guacamole on top of nachos and mix all the yummy goodness together. Also love their corn beef hash, which they make a little different their your run of the mill diner, mixed in with a lot of potatoes i believe. Very cozy atmosphere, especially after a hung over.

Three and a half stars We decided on this cute and crowded cafe for an afternoon lunch on Sunday after the sandwich shop was closed. I ordered the corned beef and hash, he the waffle w fruit. The waffle was tasty and pretty light. It was a bit dry though. The corned beef and hash was too heavy on onions (IMHO) and was not served with eggs, as some might anticipate. The prices were reasonable and the service was good, but not great.

Terrible brunch place - this place used to be good. But i think they changed owners - i was hear a few months ago. But they store extra register paper underneath the benches and the owner asked me and 2 other customers to get up in the middle of our meal so they could get more. Ridiculous. On top of that, all of the food was WAY overpriced. Corned beef hash and eggs for $10? I think not. I cant even remember exactly what I got but i just remember that it sucked. Plus the food tasted bleh. The couple next to me ordered oatmeal, which came out nasty looking and they complained. How can you eff up oatmeal?

I want to love Beechwood, but I just can't, for several reasons. 1. Their brunch menu is the only menu they offer until 4 o'clock (on weekends). So, you're telling me that if I go there at 3, I still have to eat eggs? Come on. At least offer a lunch menu or a bigger brunch menu in the afternoons. 2. They don't seat people for dinner after 8pm. In downtown JC, this is a shock to me. This is not the boonies, it's a thriving metropolis! 3. The waitstaff can definitely be flaky. There is a difference between not hovering and totally ignoring patrons when they are trying to flag down a waitress who appears to not be doing anything else and then having to ask a 2nd time -- just to get some water. The pros: 1. The place is really cute. 2. Despite a little flakiness, everyone who works there is really nice. 3. Nifty store attached. 4. Sidewalk seating, weather permitting. 5. BYO I have no complaints about the food. It is mainly for reasons #1 and #2 up top that I don't go there anymore. I would not say it's too expensive. The food is good quality and tasty.

UGH. I hope you have 4 hours to spare if you go here. Slow service IF the servers even notice you. I ordered the Steaks and Eggs, not sure what type of steak it was, perhaps a Steak Um. it was awful, I ordered scrambled eggs and they were smothered in black pepper, I hate black pepper, I sent them back and the waitress was very rude, she said they season all the dishes with pepper Whatever. They also charge 25 cents for a pat of butter.

I had sunday breakfast here with a friend. I ordered the fruit bowl and cinamon bagel, and my friend ordered the crosaint with ham?? One of the first places on Grove Street you may notice as you make your way south of City Hall. Open air seating and a chill atmosphere (coupled with some of the best indie brunch tunes) make this place more than inviting-- just walking past, you'll want whatever everyone is having and you'll beg someone to come out and try it based solely on curb appeal. My friends are loyal to this country / modern cafe, espresso bar, and tiny marketplace for local artisans. This is usually the top pick for weekend brunch among my crew, even if space is limited and we have to wait, we do. Fun twists like a Santa Fe breakfast burrito (smothered in salsa verde and very filling) and a concoction of what amounts to breakfast nachos play well alongside standards like French Toast, egg sandwiches and some nice sides. Try the mushroom hash for something different. Coffee is great, but a bit expensive ($2.10) to go. Make sure you can connect to the internet before you settle in to work from here for the day because the connection is spotty. Funny side note: you have to plug your computer into the ceiling! If you're friendly to the staff, they will be friendly to you. However, I've seen them lose patience quickly on various occasions so beware. Recently repainted and refreshed, the place is quiet at dinnertime and as others have mentioned don't forget to BYOB. Thanks, Beechwood for playing good music and making good coffee!

Love this place, my friend and I always come here for brunch on Saturdays and I just took my family there and they also loved it. Their hash is GREAT (and I'm pretty snobby when it comes to hash), I just had their egg sandwich which was awesome, and my dad got their omelet with chili sauce and he thought it was the best thing he ate all weekend. This is a great neighborhood place to have some tasty food and people watch. I've had brunch and dinner at Beechwood and everything on the menu is fresh, simple, and delicious. I walk past Beechwood every morning to get on the PATH train and curse the lucky jerks sitting in the window, enjoying the paper and a cup of coffee. I recommend the ham and cheese on a croissant and the breakfast burritos. While I wish they had a liquor license, I SUPPOSE its saving me some extra cash for dessert. One annoying thing about Beechwood is the lack of a (working) website.

We wanted to try almost everything on the menu because everything looked so good, but we ended up ordering the Veggie Lasagna, Hummus Plate, and sampled the Chicken Pesto Pasta. The Chicken Pesto and Veggie Lasagna were very good. Hummus Plate was ok - nothing incredible or fancy. Our waiter was great; she was very attentive and quick to respond. Price was also reasonable. Our main course dishes were around $10 - 11 each.

Just came back from having "brunch". Not REALLY brunch, however, as all the items on the menu were breakfast in nature. The service was so-so although the staff was friendly. If you're looking for an omelet, this could be a good place as my friend enjoyed his. I ordered what they called Chilaquiles. What I was served was a bowl of crunchy tortilla chips straight from the bag, with a little bit of tomatillo sauce and two poached eggs on top. Completely inedible and SOOOOO not worth $12. All in all, I will not be returning.

Clinton Street Bakery has magic, this place has location. I had the Salsa Burrito. Gross! The Burrito was drowning in Salsa! Nothing special. The Lobster bisque - heavy, turned into a fossil in minutes. The eggs benedict - Nothing special. The coffee - Nothing special. All in all. - Noting special, just an alternative to other places are are packed for brunch in downtown JC.

Meal: Brunch Rationale: My boyfriend's father was in town and couldn't stay inside the apartment too long because he's allergic to the cats. This is a perfect excuse to go out to brunch. Food: I ordered the Santa Fe breakfast burrito and a cup of decaf. They had a lot of breakfast burritos, so I figured it was some kind of speciality of theirs. It was good, but nothing special. I'm partial to any form of carbohydrate loaded up with guacamole, sour cream, and cholesterol. It was served "wet style," which automatically makes it taste better, but which I wasn't expecting. My coffee was fine. I've stopped by for a decaf Americano at the takeaway counter before, and it was one of the better ones I've had in Jersey City. The table next to ours ordered eggs benedict and huevos rancheros, both of which looked delicious. Service/atmosphere: Service at Beechwood Cafe is a bit of a hot mess, and that's what makes me knock the score down to 3/5. I value food much more heavily than service, so if I notice something's off, I'm unlikely to care. Beechwood just takes it a step too far. It seemed like maybe we were one of several tables that arrived at exactly the same time, because first everyone in the vicinity was waiting and then everyone got their food at the same time, but I don't know how that might explain (1) running out of knives, (2) timing everything so my boyfriend's father gets his omelette before his cup of tea, (3) putting someone else's half-eaten food on our table so you can stack our empty dishes on top of it and bring it away, or (4) the general looking-far-off-into-the-distance-and-disconnectinÂg-from-reality demeanor that everyone seems to have. This last point also applies to the guy at the counter who could have gotten a dozen cookies in the time it took him to get the one cookie we ordered on our way out. Conclusion: I want Beechwood Cafe to be successful, and they have the tools to make that happen. At the very least, their menu is solid. They just have to work a bit more on their front-of-house operations. That said, I'm happy to keep going back (their brunch menu is extremely vegetarian-friendly) with the expectation of spacey service. If they can solve that problem they'll get another star.

I really, really want to like this place more than I do. Really really. Really. The brunch menu is a bit strange, IMO--it's got a dominant mexican theme that seems out of place since everything else about the décor screams shabby chic to me. Don't order the huevos rancheros with the corn chips in the bowl. It's not the easiest dish to maneuver from the fork to your mouth and it's simply just a weird concept for a dish. Sort of like having a bowl of nacho cornflakes with eggs on top. Omelettes are overcooked and dry, never fluffy. The home fries are flavorless. Most of the busboys have no idea what they are doing. The waitstaff Is polite, but some seem very wary of you--like it's expected that at any moment you will verbally attack them. I've waited tables before in college, so I understand where they are coming from, and listening to the woman who was sitting next to me as she asked for her check made me shudder a bit in my seat as she sounded like a spoiled 30-year-old-going-on-21 Gossip Girl brat--but I digress. Supposedly there is wi-fi here but I haven't tried to use it yet. The coffee and desserts are consistently tasty. I love all of their baked goods and in the future I will probably only come here to enjoy a chocolate chip cookie and an iced coffee at one of the little, wooden, sun-drenched tables outside.

today was my self-dinner date. i liked the candlelight, wood interior, semi-busy saturday crowd, medium price range and my anonymity in it all. feeling for hearty from the autumn chill, i chose the vegetarian lasagna, basic comfort food for a cute self-courting. 85% through my meal i bite onto a hard and sharp object the size of my pinky nail. before you suggest it was an oregano leaf gone commando, it wasn't. i wish it was. it was a triangle of hard plastic. i could have lacerated the interior of my mouth or chipped a tooth. thank goodness my plate wasn't for an infant or child. if i were eating a different dish, one with a texture more crunchy, i may have missed this stray unwanted particle and digested it. lasagna is mush--- corn, beans, green beans, spinach, ricotta, sauce, pasta. something clearly did not belong. when my server (previously casual and patient) asked how my meal was i immediately pointed to my dish, the piece of plastic, mentioned it was an unsanitary hard, sharp, hazard. though apologetic, no one else approached me as i sat with my near empty plate. afterward, i got up to the cashier (same person as server) and she then said the meal was on the house, that she wasn't sure what to say, that she is very sorry and the manager left for the day. the lasagna came with a nice side salad with a fruity vinaigrette. nothing stupendous and basically satisfying sans plastic fragment. way to to dampen my alone time.

One of my favorite places in JC, I'm a bigger fan of their dinner menu than their brunch. Brunch I have only found to be a 3 star meal...I'm big on eggs benny and it was only ok...but dinner is definitely 4 stars for me. Lobster bisque is really nice and I usually stick with the Chicken Pot Pie or the Pasta's which are delicious and they're big portions as well.

I'm updating my review on Beechwood because I owe it to them since I order their food a few times a month and it's consistently delicious. My top faves are the Korean Steak Sandwhich (yum!), the chili (has a hint of cinnamon, great flavor) and the Beechwood Salad (I'm a sucker for goat cheese). The brunch fare has also improved and the outdoor seating is a big plus. One last pro: dog-friendly.

I hate that I have to do this but, it's necessary. I use to love this place their tuna salad is amazing, but today I went for brunch and waited 25 minutes with menus, with no service! No one took our order, they were too busy on their phones probably playing angry birds or temple run. My sister and I finally got up and started leaving, staff member saw and attempted to care but we were over it. They are very unprofessional and it's unfortunate that this beautiful space is being wasted by this unworthy business.

I've been here a few times to pick up some snacks/desserts. Today was the first time I went there for a meal. It was average food with average service. I ordered a bowl of their lobster bisque, the meatloaf sandwich with broccoli salad side, and had their strawberry cheesecake for dessert. The bisque was creamy but weak on taste. The sandwich bread/toast was really buttery, and the meatloaf itself was good but too mushy. Some tabasco sauce helped bring out the flavor. I'm not big on desserts but I thought the cheesecake was pleasantly light for a cheesecake, and not too sweet. The waitress was nice but a little slow on filling up water and bringing the check. I'd come back here, but only if I were bored of Ibby's Falafel or wanted some desserts.

It was a weekend and the temperature was 72F ,which means it is a perfect day for a brunch.I came here with my friends for a quick brunch. The place was packed with people who had just finished a workout and wanted to eat something real quick. We did manage to get a table outside,and we ordered some coffee, OMG!! this coffee was extremely smooth and felt like a silk drink.We refilled our cups at least 4 times in an hour ! I ordered the Egg white substituted omelet with tomatoes and peppers with a side of Banana walnut muffin,and my friends ordered a Steak& Eggs plate and a Mexican omelet;filled with cheese and Guacamole. I was extremely upset with the muffin,it was the ugliest muffin i have ever seen and the inside of it was slightly soggy,and my omelet was watery and wasn't really thick.My friends did enjoy their steak.The food wasn't horrible but i am sure they can make things better and concentrate on tiny details. Overall.they have the best coffee in Jersey city and they are pretty friendly .I am sure that their other dishes must be pretty good. I have been to Beechwood several times...mostly for brunch. I wouldn't give it exactly $ as price range though, because food there is not quite on the cheap side. However, all the ingredients used in its preparation are fresh and good quality...I can't say I have ever been disappointed...perhaps some dishes there are better than others (not a big fan of its mexican-themed dishes, as they don't seem to pack the right flavor), but never awful. You always get a handsome portion and never leave with an empty belly. I ADORE it for desert and coffee. So many delicious pastries to select from and the coffee is always strong, just the way I like. I would suggest to try the warm chocolate brownie cake, yum! this place is great if you want some cafe-style food or just a cup o' joe and a croissant. Oh yeah, I almost forgot...the tea selection is wonderful! This place doesn't serve you Lipton bags, but fancy delicious revolution tea...it's more expensive, but greatly appreciated when you crave a cup of tea worthy of a tea-lover.

I finally tried this place after years of walking by it. I wasn't impressed. First, the host was disorganized. He told us to sit at a table but didn't bring over menus, tableware, or water. We had to wait over 15 minutes before anyone came over with menus and another 10 mins. to take orders. Fortunately, the food came out quickly. I ordered the Farmers Breakfast, which is biscuits, sausage gravy, and scrambled eggs. First, let me say I hold biscuits and gravy to a higher, Southern Soul standard. This was nowhere near that. I've had better at McD's when I went home to the DC-area. My gf, on the other hand, ordered the chili which was very good and came with all the fixings (sour cream, shredded cheese, onions, avocado, etc.). My beef (pun intended) is that I really don't want to call chili because it had cinnamon in it (gasp!) and corn kernels. I will give it another shot in the distant future, and hope it changes my opinion.

Went in for a quick bite before rushing off for a movie. The menu is small, but well rounded. We got the chili. Served in a large bowl, with smaller bowls of diced red onion, shredded cheese, sour cream, and guacamole; as well as two small tortillas for impromptu burrito-making. chili is homemade and served piping hot. service was quick, although the place was rather empty at the time, so I guess that is to be expected. overall very satisfying. ate every bite. would go again.

Have lived next to the cafe (across the street) - for almost two months now... haven't had a chance to visit. Until this morning. Path service was down - so I retreated to Beechwood to get some work done while I waited. Very pleased with everything - the service - the food (had a great cappuccino and almond croissant) - the decor - etc. The free wifi doesn't hurt either. Can't wait to come back for lunch or dinner with friends.

For a brief moment, I felt like I was in the Village. Stopped in at Beechwood for our morning coffee and I was pleasantly surprised. There was a long line for the to-go counter and the cafe was a full house. It looked like a cute brunch spot and the Market portion was very country-ish loaded with bags of coffee, treats and housewares. The funniest thing being sold were these little containers stamped "Jersey City". What a way to show off your Jersey pride. Pass. The coffee is very bitter and almost stronger than Peets. Coffee purists line up, I think you will like it. I had to add sugar to my mocha. The glass case boasted huge slices of cheesecake, cookies and muffins. I'm glad Beechwood is in the area. The menu and storefront is a bit eclectic. While there are sugary snacks, home goods, and a sit down service area, the menu also boasts Asian flair with Korean steak sandwiches. I so confused be me like the Beechwood Cafe & Market. **************************************************Â************************ edit: 11/13/07 Dropped in for a bite today because my temporary roommate wanted some coffee with lunch. The restaurant portion was pretty dead but just because it was empty doesn't mean the service was any faster. I ordered a sesame bagel with jam and a side order of smoked applewood bacon. I got like 6 slices of thick crispy bacon. It was jammin. My roommate got a breakfast burrito that came with chips and guac. Good stuff, man.

This place is cute. I LOVE the decor. The prices are good. The problem is the food. My boyfriend lives in Jersey City (bless his heart) and we stop by Beechwood once in a while when we're wanting brunch, bot not wanting anything "fancy". We've tried a few items on the brunch menu. Each were ok, but could be better. Here's the low down. Eggs bennedict = hollandaise sauce was thin and bland, english muffins were a bit tough. Could be vastly improved with a classic benedict sauce and some FRESH bread, maybe a home made biscuit? Biscuits and gravy= bland, but ok. Biscuits seem a bit tough and probably frozen. Ordered a biscuit on the side (I LOVE a good biscuit) = this was not. I'm certain they're frozen. Bacon= tough Yogurt and granola= This would have been great if it simply had some good Greek yogurt and some FRESH granola. They serve this with a basic plain yogurt (possibly yoplait) and crumbled up nature's variety granola bars. Kind of lazy. It's not hard to make yogurt and granola really delicious. Overall, if they just went out of their way to source better ingredients (fresh locally baked breads, quality yogurt, etc.) They would quickly gain 2 more stars in my book. I would best describe the food as: about as good as an average person could make at home. GET SOME FRESH INGREDIENTS!

A great little place for breakast/brunch and the like. Many people there seemed to be regulars who would grab breakfast or coffee and a pastry and sit and read or work on their computers, but without the craziness of a Starbucks. Nice atmosphere. The food was good, though not prepared to order, it's made ahead of time and reheated from what I gathered, but still tasty.

Stopped in here for coffee on my way back to NYC from a brunch at a friend's place in the area. Seemed cute, if staff a little preoccupied and unreceptive. Even at 1 on a Sunday it wasn't terribly packed. Cute atmosphere and a decent latte.

Ate here for the first time recently. They make a great breakfast burrito in a number of interesting varieties. I'll definitely be back.

I love this place! I go back over and over, and I've brought nearly every visitor I've had to eat here. Their green chili breakfast burrito is incredible, the coffee is great. The tea, not so much. But the chai was awesome. I also love the pasta dish (i don't remember its name) with the chicken and tomatoes... It's great, i crave it sometimes. The service though, I'll agree with everyone else, is only so-so at best. I actually had the best service when i was there with my parents, not sure what that says. The wait staff pretty much knows me at this point, but it hasn't helped the service. I keep going back for the food though.

Coffee is pretty good, but service is terrible. This morning I waited twenty minutes before having to go to the counter to ask where the server was and to be told that their isn't one on until 8. There were five other tables just sitting and waiting. Then, after asking if I could order at the counter and take my food outside to sit, the counter girl (who was quite polite, but rather oblivious) told me no and that she was about to tell the other tables they weren't allowed to be there. She then suggested that i could order AND SIT ON THE BENCH OUT FRONT TO EAT! Really?! You have tables and customers wanting to order, one of whom is willing to overlook you allowing him to sit and wait twenty minutes without help and still patron your restaurant, but god forbid he wants to sit at an open table, better put him on the park bench out front! Beechwood, your food is average and menu sub-par. You have decent coffee and you open at 7am so I have given you my business, but no longer. I'll walk a little further to a real coffee shop, with better coffee, that will allow me to sit at a table and drink it while I eat my breakfast rather there is a server or not!

If I would have reviewed this 6 months ago, then it would have gotten 4 stars (maybe even 5), however, I had such a crappy experience last time that I have to deduct a star. I have been coming here for 2 years for their brunch. I love the fact that you can sit outside in the summer, and if you can't, there are nice big windows to people watch. This is the picture perfect cafe like you see in the movies. That is, until you get to the service. My husband has complained to me several times about how he didn't really care for how slow the service was. I've been in denial. Then about 4 months ago, we were there and he ordered a ham, egg and cheese on a croissant. When the food came, it was ham and cheese on a croissant. It was no problem, we weren't mad, it was easily fixable. He told that waitress that he received the wrong thing. She told him that he didn't, and that he ordered a ham and cheese. Then when he explained that he wanted a ham, egg and cheese she said "Oh, then you ordered it incorrectly..you should have said you wanted ...." and proceeded to tell him that it was his fault. The whole time, all he wanted was for them to throw egg on it. He didn't really care who's fault it was but she couldn't let it go. I thought it was wrong what she did, but a few months later i convinced him to go back b/c I love the breakfast. So we go back and we sit for 10 minutes and no one greets us. Finally I get up and ask for menus from the (owner?). After another 10 minutes our waitress comes, and of course it's the same one from before. She takes our order, gets our coffee and we never see her again the whole time we are there. Finally we had to ask a bus boy for our check and then as we were paying someone else came up to ask if we wanted refills on our coffee. This makes me so sad because their food is really good. I absolutely love the Sante Fe Breakfast burrito! So go ahead and try it, but just don't expect exceptional service or anything.
